Her husband has been president for just about a year now. That means one year of first lady fashion from Michelle Obama. And, oh, what a fabulous year it’s been. There were gorgeous gowns galore. She wore Madras shorts and caused a national debate. Further, she wasn’t afraid to wear the same J. Crew cardigan twice — and has undoubtedly become the retailer’s favorite first lady to date in doing so. There is even a website dedicated to following the first lady’s fashion choices. Michelle Obama has given us some truly stunning looks during these first 365 days. Here are my top ten looks:
10. Thakoon floral print coat

Worn by the first lady at the Nato Summit in France in April. It has a huge bow at the collar (a trademark of Mrs. Obama) and the colors together are stunning.

9. Kai Milla green dress

Worn to an event honoring Stevie Wonder, this dress gave the first lady a tiny waist, and the overall shape and color looked stunning on her.

8. Plaid Love Moschino blouse

Worn with gray trousers and a cardigan. There couldn’t be a more festive, yet first-lady-appropriate, outfit than this one.
7. J. Crew cardigan and skirt

Worn in London. I’m a huge fan of J. Crew, and in this particular pastel outfit, Mrs. Obama looked like she had just stepped out of the J. Crew catalog.

6. Peter Soronen gown

Worn to the 32nd annual Kennedy Center Honors, the lavender colored gown looked stunning on the first lady.

5. Floral Moschino dress

Worn at the White House. It is both classic in its shape and modern in its bold print. Absolutely lovely.

4. Red Maria Pinto dress

Worn to meet the Bushes, Michelle Obama looked statuesque in this classic red dress.
3. White one-shoulder Jason Wu dress

Talk about making a first impression. This dress, worn to the Inaugural Ball in January, was ethereal.

2. Gray Moschino dress

Worn at the presentation of the Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. Funny, because this dress reminds me of Jackie O. The tailoring and color is classic and structural.

1. Naeem Khan strapless gown

Worn to the first State Dinner in November, she looked like a movie star! The dress really showed off her lovely neckline and shoulders. Absolutely regal!

You have to be kidding, right? First of all, she wears most of her clothes one size too small (see the J Crew cardigan above and the slacks worn with the Moschino blouse above – she is PACKED into them – absolutely horrible!!). She has no clue what is appropriate to wear for specific occasions (Google “Michelle Obama Veteran’s Day to see her inappropriate choice for the ceremony at Arlington) and her accessories are often mismatched and blingy. The most appalling choice this year was the gold tinfoil ensemble she wore to the Nobel Peace Prize ceremony. The inaugural gown was horrid, as was the day outfit. Her poor choices FAR OUTWEIGH those that are decent. She needs to dress to compliment her body, not emphasis her thighs and behind. Dump the empire waists and belts, too. Awful, awful, awful… Is this article a parody or is it for real?
No parody here, Mirta. I think she’s got fabulous style…and I’m pretty sure I’m not alone. She’s wearing minimal accessories with all of the outfits above, with the exception of the evening wear. So, I totally disagree with you on that point. Well, we pretty much disagree on all points. But, I can’t think of a first lady since Jackie Kennedy who has brought more style into the White House.
Mirta – what other woman in American politics has better style? If you say Sarah Palin, we will know exactly where you stand – on a LOT of issues. Including having issues.
What I love about the First Lady too, is a simple thing – you actually see her wear something more than once! Maybe not the exact same outfit from head to toe, but a belt will pop up over here, a dress will get a new jacket over it…
There is one thing she does that I find kind of awkward, the belt OVER the cardigan OVER the dress. I’ve tried this myself lately and it just feels so bulky.
