We’re coming up on the weekend again, and you know what that means? New movies at the theater! I have to say, between “Daybreakers” last weekend and “Legion” coming out next Friday, I’m lacking in enthusiasm for this week’s releases. Regardless, here’s what you can look forward to if you’re heading out to catch a flick this weekend.
I don’t know if it’s the hype around “2012,” or if the world is just itching to end. There have been a lot of apocalypse-based and post-apocalyptic movies lately. If those happen to be your thing, you’ll want to check out “The Book of Eli” (rated R). Starring Denzel Washington, “The Book of Eli” follows one man on his journey to protect a sacred book that could save mankind from imminent destruction. It looks like it has a bit of a “Road Warrior” vibe, and Denzel’s sporting some serious scruff, so it has potential. Plus, it has Gary Oldman in it, and I rarely need an excuse to catch a movie if he’s in it.
There’s just something about Jackie Chan. I have seen every single movie he’s ever done, even some of the more obscure, Hong Kong films with cheesy voice-overs and yellow subtitles. It’s been awhile since he’s done a good movie, and I’m not sure “The Spy Next Door” is going to win me over. Call me picky, but it sounds a lot like that Ice Cube movie, “Are We There Yet.” Trying to impress his girlfriend, he has to win over her kids, but the fact that he’s a spy interferes with his agreement to babysit the kids. If you’ve got kids, and they’ve got cabin fever, this might be a fun escape for the whole family.
Like I said, the pickings this week are a little on the slim side, but if you’re a family gal and looking to get out of the house, you could always take the kids to a Saturday matinee.
