Carnival Stops Cougar-Themed Cruises

By Amanda Pendolino on January 16th, 2010

cougar-cruise-1Young men hunting for cougars may have to stay on the mainland. According to Time Magazine, Carnival Cruise Line has decided not to book any more cougar-themed groups for cruises.

The popular cruise company only started cougar cruises last month, featuring a three-day voyage on the Carnival Elation between San Diego and Ensenada, Mexico. More are planned this year for older women who prefer younger men (“cubs”). So why would Carnival put the kibosh on such a popular movement (did you hear ABC renewed Cougar Town)? It’s a mystery. In an email statement, Carnival simply said that they had “made the decision not to allow any future groups to be booked and marketed on our ships under this theme. It was a business decision.”

Travel experts speculate that Carnival is trying to be less “Girls Gone Wild” and more of a family-oriented company. Rich Gosse, spokesman for the California-based Singles Travel Company and Society of Single Professionals, which arranged the first International Cougar Cruise, says he understands Carnival’s decision, given the current economy. “They’ve got to do what they’ve got to do to survive,” says Gosse, “and we’re grateful they gave us the chance to start this.” It seems strange to me, though, don’t you think cougars and cubs have more money to spend on cruises than people with families? Maybe Carnival thinks the cougar trend will be over soon — what do you think? I say as long as Demi and Ashton stay together, it’s here to stay.
