Awards season is here! Despite the rainy conditions, the stars of both the silver and small screens brought out their most daring dresses and tailored tuxedos for the Golden Globes. As always, some failed and some succeeded, but in a refreshing turn of events from awards shows past, most stars took big risks! The bar has been set. Here are some of the hot looks and over-used trends from the first big awards show of 2010!
Winning Risk-takers:
Cameron Diaz, not nominated for a darn thing, came away with the best red-carpet look of the night. She was one hot tamale in a sizzling red Alexander McQueen dress and crimson lips. Also going bold and completely hitting it out of the park was eternal fashion muse, Diane Kruger. Her hot-pink Christian Lacroix gown with dense waves of ruffles at the neckline and tiny white bow at the waist was high-drama and high-fashion. She was perfection! Other stunners of the night were Drew Barrymore in a nude Atelier Versace gown with glittery tulle pincushions atop her left shoulder and right hip; Anna Paquin in a low-cut gold Alexander McQueen dress covered in paillettes; and the sexier-with-every-year Helen Mirren in a body-hugging black sequin gown.
One-shoulder Wonders:
The overwhelming trend of the night was the one-shoulder dress. Let’s see, which celebrities showed up in this trend? Kate Winslet, Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, Anna Kendrick, Amy Poehler, Sigourney Weaver, Jane Krakowski, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Marion Cotillard, just to name a few. Of the aforementioned ladies, only Miss Gyllenhaal pulled it off with any sort of panache! Her peach mermaid gown was fresh, young and glowing!
Must-mention Mishaps:
In true Mariah fashion, she exposed too much in a skin-tight plunging black dress. Julianne Moore went from fashionable to frumpy in a gray off-the-shoulder nightgown get-up. And Olivia Wilde’s slinky disco Dolce & Gabbana number was flashy and trashy.
The Men:
Taylor Lautner’s tux had a little more sheen than is necessary in any man’s suit. Paul McCartney and his date (who looked like she was wearing a one-of-a-kind Ed Hardy mini dress) looked disheveled. Turning things around for the gentlemen was the sharp-dressed creator of “Glee,” Ryan Murphy, wearing a gray tux with black lapels, and Tracy Morgan, who toasted the Rat Pack with his white tux jacket complete with purple pocket square.
Speaking of purple, it must be said that Sandra Bullock looked gorgeous in her violet gown, despite the slightly sheer skirt. She was a double winner for her red carpet look and Globe-winning role in “The Blind Side.”
