“I’m With Coco” Rally for Conan at Universal Studios

Team Edward and Team Jacob, move over. Team Conan is getting bigger, stronger, and louder. According to LAist, 300-400 fans of Conan O’Brien gathered in the pouring rain for an “I’m With Coco” rally at Universal Studios in Los Angeles yesterday in protest of NBC’s controversial decision to give Jay Leno back the 11:35 slot.

Things got rowdy as the crowd chanted “Jay Leno sucks!” in between screaming at drivers passing by, honking their horns. People spilled out onto Lankershim Boulevard before police arrived to calm everyone down and spread them out. The Huffington Post reports that in Chicago, more than a hundred Conan fans gathered at NBC-5’s downtown headquarters for a similar rally.

It’s not that I’m not with Coco. The gangly ginger would definitely be my pick over Jay Leno. But I don’t really feel sorry for millionaire Conan (and hey, in his classy-yet-funny letter to NBC, he said that I shouldn’t). I also feel like all the people claiming they’re with Coco don’t actually watch his show (the ratings aren’t that good, btw).

It’ll be interesting to see if Conan ends up at Fox, as many are speculating – and if any of the people “with Coco” will watch his show there!

For Twirlit readers too young to recall - or, perhaps, just not interested in late night TV, back then - it might help your understanding of the current Leno vs O'Brien mess if you get some background on the original Leno vs Letterman feud. Here's the full story of how Jay Leno took over the 'The Tonight Show' hosting gig from long-time host Johnny Carson, way back in 1993. . http://bit.ly/6FjAQq (complete article - NY Times; 1994)
