Haiti has been hit again. According to CNN, a strong 6.1 magnitude aftershock struck Haiti, which is still recovering from the devastating 7.0 magnitude quake from last week. At least one injury was reported, but there were no immediate reports of deaths or damage.
There have been several aftershocks since the 7.0 quake, but this morning’s was the strongest. Patients at a hospital near Haiti’s airport in Port-au-Prince immediately started praying as the ground shook like a ship rocking back and forth. They asked for forgiveness and protection, a nurse said.
Estimates put the death toll at 200,000, so it’s understandable that Haitians are still fearful of more earthquakes. Such a strong tremor can be a significant threat to buildings that have already been damaged. But even though a 6.1 doesn’t sound much different from a 7.0, Carrieann Bedwell with the US Geological Survey says that the energy released by the 7.0 earthquake was 32 times stronger than that of this morning’s aftershock.
Although Port-au-Prince remains in a state of chaos, relief workers are sorting things out day by day. This morning, a U.S. Navy ship brought the city much-needed medical aid. U.S. helicopters will ferry patients aboard, bringing relief to overloaded hospitals and clinics.
