Mo’Nique’s Leg Hair Wins Over Golden Globe

monique-1
Mo’Nique made a moving speech at The Golden Globe Awards last Sunday, but it wasn’t good enough to overshadow the 5 o’ clock shadow growing on her legs.

Mo’Nique gave a moving performance in the movie Precious, in which she plays an abusive mother who allows her daughter to be sexually molested.  It was the saddest movie I have seen…ever.  Mo’Nique’s portrayal of Mary, Precious’s mother, was definitely worthy of a Golden Globe Award.

Unfortunately, her leg hair has gotten more attention than her acting in recent days. The New York Daily News, along with countless other publications have been discussing whether she forgot to shave or whether she just didn’t care about shaving. It is likely her leg hair would’ve gone unnoticed had she not lifted her dress while on the red carpet.

Before I get too far in to my rant, I will say that I am a shaver.  I like the way my legs feel when they are smooth and hair-free.  That’s why I shave.

On the other hand, I’m not a Golden Globe nominee.  However, if I were a Golden Globe nominee and not a shaver, I’d likely play along.  I’d shave so people would notice my talent and not my overactive follicles.  I’d shave so I could feel a bit more sexy in my dress.  But that’s me.  And I recognize that years of conditioning have equated shaved legs with beautiful, feminine legs, in my mind.

Mo’Nique’s choice to forgo the Bic is one I may not have made, but one I can respect.  I do wish that more people could focus on her performance rather than her hair, but I know we are far too vain of a society to let something like that slide.
