There’s no doubt that texting can be a great way to stay in touch with your friends and family, but for boyfriends (new ones especially) it can be a real relationship killer. A few texts here and there is no big deal, but if you’re worried you might go overboard just follow these three rules and you’ll be fine.
- NEVER TEXT when you’re drunk. This rule makes so much sense during daylight hours, but somehow things become a little less clear cut when you’re out having a few drinks with your friends or (worse yet) just getting home to a lonely apartment after a crazy night out. Resist the urge to text when tipsy. Not only do you risk sending something silly or stupid that you’ll regret later, but if you’re really into him you’ll probably ask him to come over. This is bad because A) he’ll know you’re totally head-over-heels for him and he has all the “relationship leverage,” B) you might end up moving too fast and doing something you regret, and C) you might come off as being that clingy, stalky, crazy girl that gives all us normal girls a bad rap.
- NEVER TEXT when you’re upset. When you’re emotional it’s never a good idea to put anything into writing, let alone short whiny quips over text asking why he didn’t call or where the heck he was last night. If it’s important enough to talk about then talk about it. If not then let it go.
- NEVER TEXT more than once a day. Although having ongoing conversations and updating each other all throughout the day might work for you and your friends, it’s not good for a dating relationship — especially a new one — because it can take the place of much needed phone conversations and face time. How will you ever really get to know him if the majority of your communication is in spurts of 140 characters or less?
