Family of Melinda Duckett Suing Nancy Grace for Wrongful Death

nancy grace 1Talk show hosts may have more influence than they realize. According to ABC News, Nancy Grace of HLN (formerly CNN Headline News) interviewed 21-year-old Florida mother Melinda Duckett back in 2006, after Melinda’s two-year-old son Trenton had disappeared. Nancy grilled the woman, accusing her of hiding something. Tragically, Melinda shot and killed herself the day the taped interview was scheduled to air.

Melinda’s family is suing Nancy for wrongful death, claiming that she inflicted emotional distress on the woman. Nancy doesn’t want cameras present at the deposition on Thursday, or the prohibition of the release of the video if it is indeed taped. Her attorneys say it’s necessary to protect Nancy from embarrassment.

Earlier this month, CNN and Nancy fought back against the Ducketts, asking a judge to force the mental health facility Lifestream Behavioral Center to turn over records from when Melinda stayed there.

What do you think? Is this whole lawsuit bogus, or could Nancy really be to blame? Should hosts be more sensitive to their guests, especially when those guests are in fragile emotional states? And should cameras be allowed into the court, or should Nancy be granted some privacy?

What makes this story even more sad is that Melinda’s son Trenton has never been found. He would be four years old.

  1. Nancy Grace is a self-righteous bully who deems herself to be both judge and jury.
But, is she wholly to blame for this suicide?
That is doubtful, but she was probably a contributing factor.

  2. At a way Nancy, helped your ratings but killed this girl, you should be ashamed. Not everyone that you accuse is guilty. If we had more level headed prosecutors the real crooks would not be freed so often when they should be incarcerated. The high paid defense attorneys know your ineptness and prey on you for they know you believe everyone put in front of you is as good as convicted. Stick to the facts, just because thousands of “housewifes” watch you doesn’t mean you’re right, they’re clueless and you know it. Enough about your twins huh, we all have kids we’re proud of.

  3. Nancy Grace is an idiot.

  4. I agree with Jim. If you have ever watched her program, she is rude, bullying, menacing and belittles her staff and interviewees if their position is not the same as hers. She seems to have some cult following, but I would walk off the set if she treated me as she treats most people. I doubt that she bears full responsibility for the suicide, but she did know that Melinda was in a fragile state and should not have heckled her. So yes, she probably did contribute to it.

  5. The woman who committed suicide was clearly in a state of depression and Nancy helped push her over the edge. While Nancy may not be responsible for her death, she should feel ashamed of herself for being such a bitch. It’s funny how when the cameras are on Nancy, she wants to be saved from embarrassment, but feels completely comfortable humiliating anyone else. Nancy is an insecure woman than needs to be put in her place.

  6. Nancy Grace is an idiot and a bully. That being said who knows why this person committed suicide? Maybe she was to blame for her son’s death and couldn’t live with it. I don’t see any way of passing judgment on this without the whole truth.

  7. I’m sorry, but love her or hate her viewers and guest know what they are getting into when they go on her show. I am so sorry for this woman’s tragedies, but they are not the shows fault. Suicide is a deep and darker decision that had to be a part of something already underlying.
You can’t sue Jerry for a a ripped wig from going on his show…all the same concept.

  8. again the typical bullying of an
    innocent before proven guilty guest.
may god redeem you later in life Nancy, because i dont

  9. Nancy is a go get’m bully — just
LISTEN to her when she gets “going”
about differant things – as said before : SHE is Judge ~ JURY ~ and
    EX-E-CUTE-ION-OR | Poorthing-Let the cameras roll – W H Y SHOULD SHE BE DIFFERANT FROM OTHERS DURING A
    disposition… of course-money talks

  10. My questions is why did she consent to the interview? She had every right to refuse and not talk to anyone. She had not been charged with a crime. I don’t blame the interviewer as much as the person who feels they want everyone to hear or see them.

  11. Hang Nancy bye her balls !!

  12. My thoughts on Nancy Grace. If it is fair for those that she is interrogating to be subjected to her set of rules, why can’t we all see how she squirms under the pressure of having to answer the hard direct questions that should be coming at her. Fair for the goose etc.

  13. Could Nancy Grace be the next Jenny Jones. I will light a candle and say a prayer tonight to help that happen. Maybe they could give her time slot to CoCo, since he is now underemployed!

  14. You go nancy. She is just saying what other people are thinking or cant say in terms of general public being able not to be heard. Nancy’s show is for the strong not the weak and if you dont like her dont watch her. That woman committed suicide all on her own. Wrongful death give me a break. If Nancy was being charged for murder well whole different story line.

  15. I watch Nancy Grace and yes she is brash and rude, however to accuse her of “killing” or leading to the death of this woman seems a stretch! The story kind of went away, did they ever find the little boy?

  16. A former prosecutor with a very poor prosecution record, full of herself, had a bit more to do with this death than she would like to think. Did she contribute, absolutely and fortunately for her I do not sit on her jury when the trial opens. Unfortunately for us, we have to put up with her BS because some people think she is good at what she does. if that means evoking outrage and getting ratings, it is a sad state of affairs the media supports. Maybe it is time we think of her as being less than a Dr. Phil of the outcry media.

  17. What ever works for the accused must work for the accuser if under fire. Granted, she may not have caused the woman to commit suicide, she should have known the accused was in a fragile state of mind and considered that. Unfortuately, Nancy Grace herself is faced being sued just like she had accused other people she’s interviewed in the past. Well, if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen- it is coming back to her.

  18. I think she should be put on the spot like she loves to do to others.
I think she had a lot to do with this death. She can “browl-beat” with the best. She is so rude to her “guests” I don’t understand why they participate knowing they will be
be persecuted if they do not agree with her – SHE’S ALWAYS RIGHT!!!!
Well Nancy, in this case I hope they
    give it back to you!!!!

  19. Too bad Nancy, you can dish it out but you can’t take it. Hope you get jacked around like you jack everyone else and you lose big time! I’m glad to see you are finally getting your just deserts. Its called karma, you know “what goes around comes back around.” NOW its payback time for you!!!

  20. What a joke! Nancy doesn’t want cameras present at the deposition on Thursday, or the release of the video to protect “her” from embarrassment. What about all the people she’s humiliated. She should report the news and not pry so much into others private affairs. Now she can see how it feels.

    • Nancy Grace could never know “how it feels.” She is sub-human and is the epitome of yellow sensationalistic journalism. If there’s a hell, it was made for the likes of Nancy!

  21. Why is it so hard to grasp the concept that people are responsible for their own actions!? Why does it not occur to people that she MAY HAVE been hiding something and THAT is why she killed herself? And no, Nancy Grace is not my favorite person, but seriously, she’s to blame when tha woman when on Nancy’s show? That’s sort of like going on Jerry Springer with your spouse and being shocked when you find out they’ve been having an affair. With your neighbor’s cat.

  22. I don’t think you can hold Nancy responsible for the death of this woman. She chose to go on the show probably knowing what kind of pressure Nancy would put her under. The goal of the interview was to find out what happened to that baby. I personally feel that if this woman truly was innocent and believed that there was hope in finding her son alive she would not have killed herself. Your children give you reason to live. I think perhaps this woman was involved in something illegal/tragic that lead to her sons disappearance and her own guilt pushed her to suicide.

  23. The decision as to whether the video should be aired is up to the courts however, I believe Ms. Grace should face the same sort of harassment as she inflicted upon this young lady. Most people are not emotionally equiped to handle the type of verbal barage that Ms. Grace hit this young lady with, or the public scrutiny that will result from the airing of (for the sake of sensationalism) the interview. When networks and interviewers gain from the heartache and humiliation they inflict upon the ignorant public. (Please remember that ignorant does not mean stupid, it means uninformed or not knowledgeable.) They should be held accountable, both Ms. Grace and her network. By the way my opinion is that the video and all proceedings should be aired but not on the same network that airs Ms. Grace’s poor excuse of a show.

  24. Who cares if Nancy was rude or mean to her… she did not say hey stupid baby killer go kill yourself!
Everyone knows how Nancy and her show is. The Wanta be porn baby killer could have just not gone on the show.

  25. I do not think that Nancy Grace is responsible for this lady killing herself. However, she needs to learn how to treat people with respect and stop acting like she is above everyone. I hate the way she speaks to other attorney’s, DA, news people, etc. If I was ever talked down to by her, I would never come back to her show. Sometimes I am in disbelief at the things she say to people that are just as knowledgeable about the law as she is. She need to realize that people on her expert panel is her GUEST so she should treat them accordingly.

  26. Makes you wonder just how she treats her husband..how she must order him around, put him down and belittle him.
She has talked more about her ex-fiance Keith who has been dead since 1979, 31 years ago….than she has EVER talked about her husband David.

  27. NO she is not responsible, first of all Malinda never should have agreed to talk with her in the first place. Second- whenever your talking with some one on the other side of the phone that you don’t know, How do you know what kind of mental state their in. Third-if she is in fault I think all these bill collectors ought to be investigated (every one of them) Their worse than Nancy Grace could ever be.
