Breathe Easy Girls… Johnny Depp Lives!

I don’t know about you, but ever since River Phoenix died back in the 90s, I get a little worried when the celebrity death rumors surface. Especially now that the Internet grabs hold of the thread and runs rampant like it did this weekend past with news that Johnny Depp was dead.

Rumors fueled by a phony CNN page hosted at Angelfire.com surfaced that Depp had been killed in a car accident in France, and Twitter ran amok with them. Everyone was tweeting #RIPJohnnyDepp, and I’m sure a few die-hard female fans even broke down and cried. Not that I wouldn’t cry if something untoward happened to Johnny. I’ve hearted him since 21 Jump Street, but for one thing it’s the Internet, and this wasn’t the first time during his career that he’s been the victim of a death rumor hoax.

The death rumor hoax has really gotten out of control lately, with bizarre attention seekers hacking and slashing celebrities left and right. What these people actually get from starting the rumors, no one is sure, but the death hoax is like some bizarre Internet virus infecting social media and culture on a daily basis.  Other recently returned from the Internet cemetery are Miley Cyrus, Taylor Lautner, Jeff Goldblum and Tom Hanks.

So if you’re only now coming out of solitude to face the world after hearing about Johnny’s untimely demise, perk up, girl. He’s alive, kicking and getting ready to start filming Pirates of the Caribbean 4.
