Former NBA Player Paul Shirley Writes Offensive Letter to Haiti

paul-shirley-1Many celebrities and media figures have generously donated to the earthquake relief efforts in Haiti (Clooney’s telethon brought in over $58 million!). But not former NBA player Paul Shirley. According to The New York Daily News, Shirley wrote on flipcollective.com that he won’t be giving a “cent” to the victims of the earthquake in Haiti.

“I haven’t donated a cent to the Haitian relief effort. And I probably will not,” he said. He compared it to giving money to homeless people on the street. “I don’t think the people of Haiti will do much with my money either…Shouldn’t much of the responsibility for the disaster lie with the victims of that disaster?”

It’s one thing to criticize a government’s handling of a crisis, or investigate how charitable donations are spent. (CNN’s Anderson Cooper has done some great work on this.) But to blame people for an EARTHQUAKE? How could it be their “responsibility”? It’s as ridiculous as Pat Robertson claiming that Haitians made a pact with the devil.

Shirley also wrote this letter:

Dear Haitians –

First of all, kudos on developing the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. Your commitment to human rights, infrastructure, and birth control should be applauded.

As we prepare to assist you in this difficult time, a polite request: If it’s possible, could you not re-build your island home in the image of its predecessor? Could you not resort to the creation of flimsy shanty- and shack-towns? And could some of you maybe use a condom once in a while?

Sincerely,

The Rest of the World

It’s no shock that Shirley was fired from his freelancing gig with ESPN.

  1. He sounds like a real winner. Real classy.

  2. I agree. We give to other countries while children here are going hungry. Everyone wants the right to be free but nobody wants to work for it. Freedom means working hard and being the best so you can have the best.

  3. Puerto rican eric says:

I dig what Paul is saying. Americans, particularly celebs go out of their way to help countries in a disaster. You never here about them helping children in our country, why don’t you raise 58 million for less fortunate families children in your own damn country. Fisx your own problems Hati.

  4. Too bad Shirley’s parents didn’t use a condom on at least one particular occasion.

  5. About time someone speeks up. I feel the same way. Ok, US, will help them get back, but, a yr or 2 it will go to hell again. ALl these poor countries, instead of giving money, send condoms. Get the men and women to stop having baby after baby. WE, here, have alot of hungry children and lots of homeless. Help isn’t coming this quick for them. How about taken in some of our needy children. Hip,hip hurray for Paul for speaking what was on his mind and what you were feeling. Shame on you ESPN, ever here of freedom of speach. I guess its not such freedom of speech when its not what you want to hear. About time someone said what they reall felt.

  6. Somehow I don’t think condoms will be of much help to a country where most of the home and buildings were destroyed by a major earthquake. But maybe we should invest more in education, so people can understand the world’s situation and Kathy can actually learn spelling and basic grammer.

  7. What I don’t understand is how someone can be so stupid to write something like that when you know it will most likely lead to you being fired. How is the money that celebrities and people like me donating to Haiti affecting your lifestyle? It isn’t at all, so why complain and disrespect a culture of people that will lose up to 200,000 people. It’s also funny how those who support shirley’s comments have problem with spelling and grammar.

  8. educationisfree says:

I laugh at your folishness …we are poor indded at least we’re not IGNORANT. Try picking up a book sometime, i know it seems traumatic but trust me you’ll benefit from it.

  9. The people who say that Haiti is the way it is because the people aren’t “working hard and being the best so you can have the best” or using condoms have such little grasp of the realities that those in the rest of the world must live in that it is staggering (seriously, when was the last time you heard about over-population in Haiti? How is that even the issue at hand? Also… take a look at the birth control policies the people you probably voted for have.)

Don’t you guys find it troubling that your opinion is stupid enough to get fired for having? That those sharing your beliefs are determined by the general public to be unreasonable and ill-suited for public display?

How can you even consider having a position on what Haiti’s problem is without having been there or read anything about it (I say that with confidence because it turns out that virtually everyone who knows anything about Haiti or any place in the developing world disagrees with you)?

What makes you think that you are a reliable source in this debate? Don’t you have something to be doing other than yelling your misbegotten and baffling opinions? Go do that instead and leave the rational thought to someone, anyone, else.
    -f

PS. Free speech does not apply to ESPN, it applies to the government. The difference is you can leave ESPN if you don’t like their rules (or rather, they will fire you).

  10. The homeless here….does not compare to homeless people in Haiti…or the rest of developing countries ..we have services and shelters that aid the homeless and needy in America…in haiti there are no welfare checks, shelter homes or government services. The poverty in the U.S. does not compare to poverty in Haiti. Like the saying goes a man (America) complains that his shoes is worn and old…when he he sees a man that does not have shoes or worse yet doesnt even have legs. In idiots term stop complaining when other people have it worse than you do. Americans should be lucky and grateful that they dont live in third world country and should show gratitude for the blessings that god give them.

  11. i would hate it too says:

The only people who are SO outraged and offended by this guy’s remarks are the bleeding hearts who sent money! I don’t share all of his views, in general they are pretty outrageous (ie: don’t blame people for an earthquake) but who in this world “deserves” free money. My heart goes out to the people who are stuck, STARVED, and died of hunger/thirst trapped under tons of rubble. But seriously, has anybody seen the US economy over the past couple of years? Where the hell is this money coming from when our country is close to being owned because of our debts. The countries sending millions of dollars worth of resources should OWN Haiti until they can get it together well enough to pay back their debts. The celebrities are getting their moneys worth, ATTENTION. Where is our benefit!? The only reason this guy got fired is because he went against the popular emotion, so ESPN doesn’t want people to think they support him. WAKE UP AMERICANS! Raising/sending money isn’t always the answer, especially if you don’t know how its being used. And our likely tax money that is being sent over there should be working to our advantage. NOTHING is free Haiti.

  12. Ignorance is bless. Especially after reading all of the ignorant comments here. Before most of you jump on the Shriley Ban wagon open up a book and read about the only nation that had to pay a war debt of 40 billion for over 100 years 1845-1947 to the defeated party. Read about how the U.S government’s (William Jennings Bryan) treatment of black people here and in other countries and the embargo imposed on a small island. Read about the black soldiers in the war of 1812 and what island nation they were from. And finally read about who backed those corrupt government officials in Haiti during the 70′s and 80′s. What does that have to do with helping the Haitian people in this great time of need. Haiti helped the United States in the past (although most of you are ignorant of this fact lookup the Louisiana purchase, war 1812,). And if you don’t want to give then don’t

  13. Paul Shirley? Never heard pf him. I watched the NBA since the “Bad Boys” of Detroit and Paul Shirley? Idk. People come together in the eye of a major catastrophe. From Hurricane Andrew, to Hurricane Katrina, and now the earthquake. Im sure if that bum had a relative in Haiti, he would be the first to offer to donate of offer to help. Furthermore, how could a person even say what he said when there are kids in Haiti who lost their parents over this earthquake, starving, living in a tent. Have you ever hearing anyone starving to death in the U.S.?

  14. I’d love to shove a boot up this guy’s ass… then yank it out just as fast.

  15. Call me a bleeding heart, I don’t care. I think there is a fine line between pity-helping people who don’t need it, and offering them a hand so they can pick themselves up out of the rubble–especially after a natural disaster. It makes my bleeding heart sad to know people care that little about others.

  16. lanimal outhouse says:

I think paul is correct. they need to try and improve their situation, but in reality they will not. why waste our time and money on them when we have our own issues here and people to help in our own country. so yes, dear haiti, use a condom and sink like atlantis.

  17. This comment is for Puerto rican eric…
If you were a Puerto Rican you would know that the USA has been supporting Puerto Rico since the Spanish American war you idiot. If you were a Puerto Rican you would also know that if not for the USA providing food stamps for the entire island your butt wouldn’t even be here.. And last but not least,,,, If you are a Puerto Rican you or someone in your family is on Welfare. I am a Puerto Rican and I know this for a fact. I’ll bet you can’t even speak Spanish.

  18. Who The Hell is Shirley Writes??????
Oh a former NBA player. He must have sucked at that too,,,or he wouldn’t be FORMER.

  19. lanimal outhouse,Kody Boye. I have more respect for that animal Charls Manson than I do for you two.
At least he has the guts to tattoo a swastika on his forhead so that people could see he’s a prick.

  20. read the whole blog entry says:

    http://www.flipcollective.com/2010/01/26/if-you-rebuild-it-they-will-come-by-paul-shirley/
if you read his whole blog you’ll realize that taking the “letter to the Haitians” bit is taken fully out of context. He actually has some good points to make, even if I don’t agree with all of them

  21. read the whole blog entry says:

also, he never blames them for the earthquake, he blames them for being ill prepared for an earthquake and other natural disasters.

  22. I read Paul Shirley’s comments on the Haiti situation, and i’m still baffled that someone – anyone – would show any form of insensitivity to this great human tragedy that just occurred in Haiti….

Well we reap what we sow, so Paul Shirley, pr Eric, etc… Keep your pennies in your pocket, it is all yours after all. When time comes in your life when you lose your fat income, Mr. Shirley, or your food stamps, PR Eric, and you see no intevention knock on your door to assist in those bad times, don’t bother go out looking for it.

  23. TRU HAITIAN TEACHYA says:

I was actually going to let some of you IDIOTS off with your FOOLHEARTED remarks, especially SILVER & PEURTO RICAN eric, you make absolutely NO SENSE. You see in order to HAVE an opinion, you have to start by knowing what the hell your talking about. KNOW YOUR HISTORY…..Im actually surprised that you would agree with thE idiot IN this story.YOU SEE, I bet you didnt even know about your own countries problem in viequs,PR a couple of years ago, did you even know that it has/had one of the highest cancer rates b/c of the ….you guessed it the US government. yeah buddy they were bombing on that island for damn near 41 years until they got pressure from the masses and it was brought to the light AND FORCIBLY REMOVED AND DISALLOWED TO CONTINUE THEIR BOMBING. In terms of Haiti we are the first black republic, thats 206 (to be exact) years that we’ve been freed from the tyranny of the French. We or should I say Toussaint L’ouverture with the help of a spirited group of haitian rebels defeated Napoleon Bonaparte…yes that Napoleon with the complex….JUST A BRIEF HISTORY….In 1804, when Haiti achieved its freedom from France in the world’s 1ST “SUCCESSFUL” slave revolution, the United States refused to recognize the country. The US continued to refuse recognition to Haiti for 60 more years. Why? Because the US continued to enslave millions of its own citizens and feared recognizing Haiti would “ENCOURAGE” slave revolution in the US.After the 1804 revolution, Haiti was the subject of a crippling economic embargo by France and the US. US sanctions lasted until 1863. France ultimately used its military power to force Haiti to pay reparations for the slaves who were freed. The reparations were 150 million francs. (France sold the entire Louisiana territory to the US for 80 million francs!)Haiti was forced to borrow money from banks in France and the US to pay reparations to France. A major loan from the US to pay off the French was finally paid off in 1947. The current value of the money Haiti was forced to pay to French and US banks? Over $20 Billion – with a BIG B.US based corporations have for years been teaming up with Haitian elite to run sweatshops teeming with tens of thousands of Haitians who earn less than $2 a day.

The Haitian people have resisted the economic and military power of the US and others ever since their independence. Like all of us, Haitians made their own mistakes as well. But US power has forced Haitians to pay great prices – deaths, debt and abuse.

It is time for the people of the US to join with Haitians and reverse the course of US-Haitian relations.
This brief history shows why the US owes Haiti Billions – with a big B. This is not charity. This is justice. This is reparations. The current crisis is an opportunity for people in the US to own up to our country’s history of dominating Haiti and to make a truly just response.

  24. Wow blaming people for not being prepared for and earthquake…hmm..sounds like Katrina..hate to see if an earthquake hit the east coast here in America..and all this talk of giving and expecting something in return..wow..sick..that’s all I can say about that…

  25. I still cannot believe that people can be so insensitive after a natural disaster. Shirley, I think its a matter of you being pure against blacks because you are one of those suppose “Elite” but lets see how far you are going to get with that attitude. You are insensitive, selfish and full of yourself. YOU WILL FALL

  26. ESPN dropping you is just the commencement of you a wonderful down turn for you. Your expression is purely your own selfish, inconsiderate opinion. your arrogance make me really wonder if on that one occasion your parents turn dumb or were they just as ignorant not to use condoms so maybe its in the blood line… YOU IDIOT Shirley

  27. To the ones b*tching about us not helping the poor here…WE’RE THE ONLY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WHERE THE POOR PEOPLE ARE FAT!!!!! I think we help ours just FINE! Haiti has its issues, but an earthquake?!! This guy’s a d**che has-been who has no business blogging, especially since he can’t even use proper grammar! D’ass!

  28. I think Paul Shirley is trying to get a bite of publicity out of the Haitian disaster and dont have a darm red cent to make as contribution. You ass is probably just as broke or worst off than the poor Haitins. I don’t beleive that you dont want to give but you have no shit to do so. Your Broke ass Shirley. You are jus greiving becaus eyou wish your selfish ass can get a cut out of the pie in some way or another.Look at this you are FORMER basket ball star, You are now Former freelancer at ESPN, think about the amount of former that will be added to your stupid ass name Shirley. You IDIOT

  29. He’s an asshole plane and simple.

Sometimes you should keep your mouth shut.

I agree his parents DEFINITELY should have used a condom.

  30. to the d**chebag lanimal outhouse (and I guess this goes to Paul Shirley as well),
Let’s take a moment to consider WHY Haiti is a third world country. As a country subjected to constant economic exploitation for the last 400 years, Haiti’s relatively scarce resources have never been used to develop itself. You think Haiti chooses to be in the situation it is in? You think Haitians do not strive for self-improvement? Here’s a news-flash: Haiti is a democracy with ELECTED leaders. Do you think that Haitians vote thinking, “hmmmm, which of these candidates would screw us the most?” I’m not denying corruption in Haiti, but blaming ONLY Haitians for their situation is one of the most bigoted ideas I have ever heard.
    Let’s look at the solutions…
How bout we nationalize Haitian resources by kicking out US companies that have exploited cheap Haitian labor while EXPORTING Haiti’s food sources. Now you’re a smart guy so I’m sure you can see the irony in exporting food out of a starving country. While we’re at it, why don’t we universalize this idea to ALL third world countries? At the same time, let’s watch the US economy plummet. We will become a third-world country and then you can blame us for being in our situation because we “refuse to change.”
    Dumba**

  31. Why is no one taking responsibility for the natural disaster known as Paul Shirley’s basketball career?

If there were a fund to buy Paul Shirley some decency, I’d chip in even though I think he’s an asshole.

  32. he worded things very poorly- but there are some legitimate criticisms here… our country has given tons of money to this country for years but it hasnt done a thing because the government is so corrupt… now the government gives 100 million of our money putting us further in debt and asks us citizens to give millions and millions on top of it…we feel better because we gave but the money will have only minimal effect…
doctors, shelter, food and basic supplies are what are needed now and the primary problem right now is getting those supplies to the people in time..
but it does bug me that we are in effect rewarding the corrupt government by taking care of their people for them…
many americans have spent their own time and money for 20 plus years going down there to help provide medical help, educational help and to help the kids there….

  33. The 6’10″ Shirley comes up short on and off the court.

“After their playoff elimination, the Suns did not re-sign him, as he rarely played in his twelfth man position. [1] He was the author of a blog for ESPN.com entitled “My So-Called Career”.[2]

Shirley was signed to a non-guaranteed contract by the Minnesota Timberwolves in early October, but was cut in training camp before the start of the 2006-07 season. On an ESPN.com chat on October 23, Shirley referenced the $10 million, 5-year contract of Mark Madsen as the reason why he was released.”

  34. You can see from my previous post that Shirley has unresolved internal issues, regarding his own manhood. First growing with up the name Shirley. He makes it to the NBA, then quickly gets cut by two teams. He blames another White NBA player for his woes, instead of the accepting the fact that he wasn’t good enough. Someone was kind enough to give him a chance with ESPN. He blew it. His lack of basketball skills has been surpassed by his lack of humanity. On his present course, he may find himself homeless, not by a natural disaster, but his own man-made disaster.

  35. What a selfish jerk…he was a nobody NBA player and a bigger idiot as a writer, I hope people ignore his blogs and comments…dumb.

  36. In 10 years, Haiti will be exactly what it was 1 month ago.

Good for you, you sent $10 to the relief effort. From your cell phone nonetheless. You darling angel, just look at you. Your wireless carrier will gladly donate $9.25 to a vendor between them and a charity, who, after all administrative fees will send a little under $8 to the island, where it will be spent carelessly by thieves. Thats right, your $10 donation will yield some poor schmuck exactly 2 bottles of water. Please don’t for a moment think that this person will appreciate it, because the second bottle will be stolen from him within 10 minutes. By the time your next wireless bill arrives, these people will have done nothing to improve themselves. But reading some of these posts, some of you are onto something. EDUCATION. Thats where it is. Get these fools BOOKS TO READ. Books on building codes. Books on how to build safely. Books on fault lines, and what they mean. Maybe, just maybe, one of these fools will understand whats been told to them for decades. You are in harms way, and you’ve done NOTHING to prepare yourselves.

Maybe next time the Richter scale will hit a little harder. Think ’20′.

  37. derek huffman says:

GOOD! About time someone tell the Truth. Whining do-gooders, snivelling and wringing their hands make me sick.

I’ve said it before, Haiti is Liberia in the Caribbean. You could have Air Force C5s dropping pallets of 100 dollar bills on them and in 6 months would have the same AIDS-infected filth-ridden sewer.

  38. NICE! Its about time someone has the balls to speak the truth. Haiti could be a self sustaining country, they have everything they need to thrive and prosper from fishing agriculture and tourism. But the U.S. and other countrys have been giving them money for years and they have grown to accustom to handouts to ever help themselves. We are enablers in their poverty and they are living the way they choose to. How many of you Haiti Sympathizers have driven past a homeless guy begging for money and thought “hey why doesnt he get his lazy ass up and get a job and help himself” Well Haiti isn’t any different. There are millions of able bodied men and women there that can build up there country and since black people are equal to white people in intelligence and physicality they should have no problem putting themselves back together. Everyone who donates money is a racist. They must not think that blacks are smart enough to do anything for themselves.

  39. You know atomic, I read you’re comment and tried to decide whether you actually meant what you are saying or simply satirizing this position by saying something so incredibly (and almost hilariously) ignorant and stupid. First of all, yes, Haiti could be a self-sustaining country, but instead foreign influence and corporations have lead to extreme exploitation of their resources (as you may read in my previous comment). You think that the United States is doing Haiti an overall favor? I guarantee you, the US has extracted FAR more money from Haiti than they have “graciously” donated. Second, how can you accuse “Haiti Sympathizers” of being racist? You just said, effectively, that we should not support Haitians because they are black. Hey genius, we are helping HAITIANS, not black people. Third, I have NEVER thought, “get your lazy ass up and get a job.” Anyone with any common sense would understand that more often than not (especially in today’s economic climate) homeless people should not be blamed for their homelessness. The same for Haiti. You, like everyone who shares your ignorant, distorted views, are the “poverty enablers.” By ignoring the fact that WE are partly culpable for third-world poverty and refusing to help during the most needy and dire times, YOU are perpetuating this unjust and immoral system.

  40. These people had a natural disaster. I am sickened by the comments that we would not help save human life. Those people were born there and had no choice, and you think they should starve, slowly being starved to death, pinned underneath buildings and rubble because kids also starve here? Sick sick sick. You people feel that you have to make a choice, save them or save us. It is a fallacy that you would have to choose. You are just ugly bitter angry people and I hope that in your time of need, you get someone like you. Someone who won’t help you unpin your child underneath a building or someone who would sit an watch you drown – because you deserve someone just like you.

  41. Only a true racist would advocate giving money to Haiti. You cant have it both ways, either blacks are equal to whites or they are inferior. If you claim they are equal then why have they been accepting aid from us year after year yet have not improved their living conditions at all. In a few months a hurricane or two will rip through there and destroy it all over again. Donating to Haiti is like throwing money into a bottomless pit that is also on fire.

Save your donations for a homeless American Vietnam Vet that gave up his sanity for you, or a kid in your neighborhood who lost his/her legs in Iraq for the gas in your SUV.

  42. We are helping HAITIANS, not blacks!!!

  43. Bscal, you are such a toolbox. Grats on having such strong feelings hero and it takes a real hero to talk about caring. When does your flight leave for Haiti? You could probably carpool with George Clooney and Sean Penn. I’m sure the three of you will really bond while selflessly digging through the rubble and rebuilding or finally building lots of schools and houses.

Or are you just another “arm chair altruist”? You’re a better person than me I guess for cheering on the rescue workers in the comfort of your warm home and texting your $10.00 in. Just keep on giving that man a fish rather than teaching him how to fish.

  44. Congratulations on having to resort to personal attacks after losing the argument. Matter of fact, I’m currently a med. student on rotation in Nicaragua who is, yes, proud to be considered in the company of George Clooney and Sean Penn. Boom…roasted

  45. Ok this is coming from someone who doesn’t know who the man is and does not even watch basketball. Throwing away the liberal guilt bullshit of being politically correct and biased American media. This guy was 100% correct and should not have lost his job it’s almost horrible that someone can threaten your job over an opinion a CORRECT opinion at that. Country’s economy is based around receiving charity funds, child prostitution, human slave trade and oragan trade etc.. it get’s much worse. If you claim I am a bigot for this you are a complete lost cause and have been indoctrinated by a bunch of liars. Help the earthquake survivors and the people rebuild them leave them to sink back into their poverty that they have created for themselves you cannot fix this no matter how many millions you wastefully throw at them their education level is too low.

  46. David
This has nothing to do with Liberals or Conservatives. I know too many good Conservatives and you talk shit as if this were a Conservative opinion. If something like this happened in California (and it has in the past)We would help even a asshole like you.
    papo3rd

  47. David, By the way…I know that I have a type-o in front of asshole, so don’t waste your time telling me to learn how to write.
Most of the time people like you look for anything to try to explain your own stupidity.

  48. TO ANYONE THAT THINKS THAT HELPING ANOTHER HUMAN BEING IS WRONG. Perhaps someday you or someone that you care for will be buried in the rubble of of a demolished structure. Perhaps when you see people of all colors, religions, and political beliefs coming together as one, to help you or the one you care for, perhaps than you and people like you will understand. For the sake of mankind, I hope that day comes soon for all of you.

  50. Sherley who are you to critize the people in Haiti? You should be ashamed of yourself. It`s hard to conceive how ignorant you are. By the way, can you stop natural disaster? Poor you, you don`t even know what will occur tomorrow or see what`s happening 100 miles away.
In the past, Haiti produced 65% of the world`s sugar and provided France with much of its financial resources, as the plantation system is lucrative, therefore France did not want to lose such a valuable colony.
At the seige of Savannah Haitans fearlessly shed their blood for the independance of United States, they fought alongside colonial troops against the British on oct. 1779.
Inform yourself before you make yourself look ugly and stupid.

  51. I agree with Paul.Haitians need to help themselves more than the world is helping them. Instead they have organized themselves in gangs for looting.

  52. It is this callousness that makes people hate US Americans. Instead of playing basketball, he should have spent some time in high school or college reading books and educate himself.

  53. I’m pretty sure Haiti has received more money than they originally had before this disaster. Is that wrong to say? I’ve donated to the relief fund, and I empathize for the Haitians… but I needed to say that somewhere.

  54. I can’t even believe some of the comments that i’m reading. 1)We shouldn’t help the people of haiti because there are poor people here..or 2)were mad because of the telethon by the stars to raise money when they don’t do anything for the people here. 3)Let’s not even talk about shirley retarded self talking bout wear a condom. 1st off how many of you will read this because every1 has access to a computer & have a bed to sleep in. unlike the haitians that r trapped under concrete of hurting in pain from infection. second it’s not like these stars don’t donate and have charities for other causes..do ur research idiots. third wear a condom.. r u serious. any1 who agrees with that must stop reading now N CHECK URSELF IN2 A MENTAL HOSPITAL. What do having children have to do with a natural disaster of this magnitude. some idiot wrote lets not help them because there poor n going b in the same state 1nce were done donating.. right so lets leave them to die. and give the money to our wonderful writers so that they can run out and get ipods, cellphones or so they can go stuff there faces at MC D’s etc. any1 that even attempted to agree with paul views “any of his views” make me sick to stomach that such ignorance lives in people hearts. karma my dear friends.. 1 day the shoe will b on the other foot. might not b the same circumstances but 1 day you will some1′s help & I only hope the person you run to is not a mirror image of selfish, ingorant poor excuse of a human being that your are!!!!

  55. Way to go Jay

  56. For the love of humanity says:

Humanity seems to be a thing of the past. All over the world, Americans are envied for their lavish lifestyles, and yet hated for their ignorance and arrogance. And just because an idea might make some sort of sense does not mean it should be voiced out loud. Yes there are thugs and criminals ruining things in Haiti but we can’t let that stop us from helping our fellow humans in need. What do the supporters of P. Shirley (Paul included) want us to do? Watch these people die? Are we blaming the innocent for something thats completely out of their control (earthquake)? Are we also blaming these poor souls for having a corrupt government? Anyone who knows anything about third world politics knows that the general population are nothing more than victims. If they speak up death finds them, their family and their friends. Anyway if any of P. Shirley’s supporters have a better idea than giving during these people’s time of need, then I think its only fair that we hear them out. I will say that school (education) is not an option at this point (when their society is rebuilt – great idea!). I also agree that if the city can be moved from the fault lines, that would be a good idea and save everyone a lot of grief in the future.

  57. I once had a lavish lifestyle in this great country. Not for one moment did I not realize that even a poor person in the US could thrive. I no longer have that lifestyle. I pay my bills and put food on the table and we have managed to keep a roof over our heads. I thank God that. We always have a little extra. I still love this country. Haiti and other countries have suffered devastation, as has our own, remember 9/11. People in fear of losing their lives walked into an unstable structure, why…..? because they cared. So many people lost their lives trying to save others. My heart goes out to everyone that has posted on this Blog. If somehow this changes one persons thoughts about helping others, we have done a great job.
Thank you everyone for caring, and my
    God bless all of you.

  58. Paul Shirley 4 President says:

I say we just bomb that country and take it over, let decent rich people own a beautiful tropical oceanic view. Tru Haitian TeachYA. . you should run for secretary of education, if you win can you make Ebonics our national language? SHIRLEY 2012!!!!

  59. Amen to Paul Shirley says:

Thank you Paul for saying what all sensible people are thinking. It’s not our fault these people chose to make buildings out of toothpicks (ever hear of rebar?) When is says in the bible “the foolish man builds his house upon the sand” it’s not just a metaphor for a strong foundation in your life. It also actually means “don’t build your house upon the sand” i.e.don’t build your house so that it may be knocked down easily, make a solid structure that your family will be safe in, like try implementing some building codes or some silly idea like that. And yeah, Katrina victims, how stupid to live in a city where water is above you on three sides. Gee, I didn’t see THAT one coming.

  60. Before someone say somehing so stupid. we have to say haitian are noot the reason that haiti is the poorest contry in the west, the real reasons are the secret goverment and the secret societies who are doing all the wrong to the people an choosing which contry to have and which on wont have!
i mean they hade still so much from this people and they still taking stuff from them, all their recorces are been taking by other contry including american, and now PAUL GONNA SAY SOMETHING LIKE THAT. HISTORY SHOW THAT HAITI ONCE WHERE THE RICHES CONTRY IN HE WEST! WELL! I think everyone have their ups and down in life. But I don;t think the haitian say that when y’all goverment striks by 911.
