Vegan Recipe Revamp: Chili Dogs

chili-dog-1
We may be vegan, but that doesn’t mean we don’t enjoy some junkier food now and again. And The Superbowl is the perfect time to sneak some healthier vegan fare in with the usual chips and dip. Whenever I’m in the “dog” house with my husband, I freely hand him the remote to turn on the game and I whip up some of these vegan chili dogs and a batch of butternut squash fries. They say, “I love you, but just not enough to let you clog your arteries or slaughter animals.” And really, isn’t that what love is all about?

Vegan Chili Dogs

  • 1 pkg. vegan hot dogs (Lightlife and Yves are our favorites)
  • 1 pkg. whole wheat hot dog buns
  • 1 can vegan chili (try Amy’s or make your own)
  • 1-2 c. shredded vegan cheese (optional)
  • ketchup, mustard, relish, onions, jalapeños, green onions, etc.

Prepare hot dogs and chili according to package directions. Place buns on a cookie sheet and toast under the broiler for a few minutes, until toasted. Place hot dogs and chili on buns and top with shredded vegan cheese, if using. Place dogs under broiler again until cheese is melted. Top with mustard, ketchup and all your usual hot dog fixings. Remember, if you cover anything with enough “stuff,” they’ll never know the difference!
