Honda Recall: Honda Fit’s Fire Hazard

The Honda Fit is not so fit after all. In the wake of Toyota’s mass recall of over five million cars, Honda has joined the party with their own recall of 646,000 vehicles.

According to Fox News, the recall affects the 2007-2008 Fit subcompact, 141,140 of which have been sold in the United States. (The models were built in Japan, China, Brazil, Thailand, Malaysia and India.) The problem stems from a master power window switch on the drivers side. About 10 percent of the cars will need replacement switches, while most will get waterproof skirts to prevent water from seeping in. There have been seven reported cases of the part melting in the U.S., two involving fire. No injuries have been linked to the defect at this time.

From Honda’s official statement: “Under some severe operating conditions, water, rain, or other liquid may enter the driver’s window and reach the master power window switch, resulting in impaired function of the switch. If the master power window switch is damaged as a result of the liquid intrusion, it may result in failure of the switch and overheating. An overheating switch may cause smoke, melting or, potentially, fire.”

Yeesh! I’m starting to think there’s some kind of conspiracy to make people take the bus! Owners are asked to contact their Honda dealer, or call customer service at 1-800-999-1009 for more information on the recall.
