Celebrate Black History Month 2010 – With AT&T and Pepsi?

mlk-jr-1Today marks the beginning of Black History Month, when we take the time to remember all the African-Americans who have inspired us or changed our world. From Martin Luther King, Jr. to Ella Fitzgerald to even our current president Barack Obama, there is a rich history to soak up.

This year, A&T has launched a campaign called 28 days, suggesting that we not only look back, but also forward in our own lives. “Everybody wants a page in history,” the website says. “This February, get started writing yours.”

Here are their three steps:
1. Set your goal and create in your calendar a 28-step plan of action.
2. Be inspired by Movers & Shakers like Russell Simmons and Laila Ali.
3. Cheer and be cheered, as 28 steps add up to one huge stride forward.

Maybe you could start a grassroots campaign to change something you’re not happy with. Laws against gay marriage, maybe? You could also take to the streets to raise money for a cause you’re passionate about, like cancer research or earthquake relief in Haiti. According to The Huffington Post, seven-year-old Charlie Simpson raised $160,000 for Haiti, all on his own. If he can do it, so can you!

The Pepsi Refresh Project will also award $20 million in grants to improve communities. It is expected to benefit “local organizations and causes proposed by the public in realms like health, arts and culture, the environment and education.” You can submit ideas and vote on your faves at RefreshEverything.com!

If there’s anything to learn from Black History Month, it’s that we all must stand up for what we believe in.
