Groundhog Day 2010: Did He See His Shadow? (VIDEO)

Even more anticipated than today’s Oscar nominees announcement is the crucially important news from Punxsutawney, PA. Did the famed groundhog Punxsutawney Phil see his shadow? As the German folklore goes, if he does, he’ll crawl back into his hole for six more weeks of winter. But if he doesn’t, we’ll get an early spring. Check out the video:

According to The Los Angeles Times, more than 100,000 crazies braved the cold to see Punxsutawney Phil’s verdict: and yes, he DID see his shadow. While Phil is the most famous of the psychic groundhogs, there are few more who chime in every Feburary 2. Dover Doug also saw his shadow and quickly went back to bed.

Poor Richard, who has been stuffed for a number of years, did not see his shadow at the York Elks Club. Octoraro Orphie also failed to see his shadow at the 102nd gathering of the Slumbering Groundhog Lodge of Quarryville.

I never quite understood the logic behind Groundhog’s Day. Besides it being ridiculous to use animal scampering to predict weather, think about it. Groundhogs only see their shadows when the sun is out. And if the sun is out, wouldn’t that signal an early spring more than it would a long winter?

I’m so glad I just spend a few minutes thinking about this.
