Who the Hell is Kesha?

kesha-1
“Who the hell is Kesha?” I first asked that question over the weekend while in a Washington, D.C., nightclub. Screaming above the thumping club music, a friend of a friend tried to explain to me his connection to this apparently famous pop singer. At first I thought, Does he mean Keyshia? Like Keyshia Cole? No, that was wrong. Apparently, Kesha is a whole other lady all together. Her song came on later that night and it was pointed out to me. But, still, there was no connection. The light bulb did not go on.

Fast forward to the next evening, Grammy night! Still in D.C., and watching the E! red carpet telecast with a friend when on the screen appears some tragic girl with feathers in her stringy blonde extensions and a tacky gold Flapper dress. Kesha! Or, Ke$ha, as it appears on her album cover. So now I had a face to a name, but still could not place her in the stratosphere of pop culture. Why is she famous? The answer came almost too quickly. During the Grammy coverage, E! cut to a commercial break using a song I’d heard before during awards show coverage from earlier this year. It is a dancey, kind of run-of-the-mill pop song. Could have been sung by any pop star of the moment. But, no! It was Kesha. It was her song that I’d heard throughout E!’s red carpet coverage of the Golden Globes. And in all the promos leading up to that red carpet coverage.

Two things suddenly became clear. One, I watch way too much E!. And, two, this girl Kesha is basically famous for writing and performing the theme song for the E! network, which has sickeningly also gone on to top the charts. Oh, and she once peed in a sink in a bar bathroom. So, there you have it ladies and gentlemen. Kesha! Famous for one song and one drunken night in a London pub! Yay for pop culture!

Here’s that song that you’re hearing EVERYWHERE…
