tina-fey-emmy-1West Coasters, rejoice! According to Broadcasting & Cable, NBC executives are seriously considering a plan to offer the 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards live across the country when the network broadcasts the ceremony Aug. 29. The move would follow the same format as the Golden Globers, which NBC broadcast live coast-to-coast for the first time on January 17.

The upside to airing the show live everywhere is that viewers won’t find out the show’s winners via spoilers on Twitter, Facebook and other websites – and will be more likely to tune into the actual broadcast. NBC has reason to believe it’s a good plan, since ratings for the Golden Globes went up significantly this year. However, the Grammys, which aired on CBS on Jan. 31, followed the old tape-delay plan and also went up in ratings. (It was the biggest showing for the award show since 2004.) In addition, Variety reports that last night’s Superbowl drew in CBS’ highest overnight rating in 23 years…so maybe we’re just really into watching big national events lately?

Either way, I’m excited by the prospect that we won’t have to go into social media shutdown whenever there’s an awards show on TV!
