Gen X Has Its First Midlife Crisis – The Story of Billy Corgan and Jessica Simpson

Sound the bell, ring the alarm, we are witnessing the first of our Gen-X idols in his midlife crisis.

Billy Corgan, lead singer of one of my favorite bands of my teen-angst years, Smashing Pumpkins, has turned in his brooding ways for a more light-hearted view of the world.  He dated Jessica Simpson.  As I ponder all the reasons Corgan may have been attracted to Simpson, I’m sure little of it has to do with her slammin’ 20-something body or her good looks.  I’m sure it’s her personality.

Allow me to count the reasons Corgan was attracted to Simpson.

1.  He loves her spiritual side. As the daughter of a preacher, Simpson has a spiritual side the public may not be very familiar with.  Recently, she stated she was contemplating taking religion classes at a university.  ”I’ve been contemplating taking a college course in religion. I love religion. I remember whenever the book ‘The Da Vinci Code’ came out, the Discovery Channel did this three-night piece on it that I TiVoed and then watched eight times,” said Simpson.  This thirst for religious knowledge can be inspiring to someone as introspective as Corgan.

2.  She has a diverse palate.  Going to dinner with Simpson likely never gets old.  I harken back to the days of her reality show, when the whole world heard, “Is this chicken, what I have, or is this fish? I know it’s tuna, but it says ‘Chicken by the Sea.’”  I’m sure simply explaining what Simpson is eating will take enough time that Corgan will never have to worry about running out of things to say.

3.  Men love women in music. They do have this in common.  Corgan, with lyrics like “Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage” and Simpson with lyrics like “Leave your dishes in the sink, Leave your ice cubes in your drink, Just come on over” leaves a lot of room for romantic poetry if, and hopefully when, they collaborate.
