Is anyone surprised that the model in Miu Miu’s new ad campaign isn’t old enough to drive? I mean, really? Yet, there is controversy surrounding 15-year-old model Lindsey Wixson. And while the characterizations of the fashion industry as a business that sexualizes young girls and creates unhealthy ideals of beauty are generally true, they do not apply in this instance.
Why is such a big deal being made about Lindsey’s photos for Miu Miu? Chanel Iman, now a modeling veteran at age 20, was walking runways when she was 16. Brooke Shields starred in her famous Calvin Klein print ad when she was 15. Lily Cole was modeling at 13. This isn’t a new trend. In the ads, Lindsey is fully clothed, looks her age (or at least somewhere in the ballpark) and is promoting a brand known for its youthful image. Yes, she is very skinny. Then again, she’s 15. I’m sure there are thousands of girls in high schools across America that are just as thin. But her face is so uniquely gorgeous it’s no wonder designers want her in their ads.
If anything, Lindsay should be commended for being assertive and requesting a bra on a recent W magazine shoot that had her modeling a see-through top. Obviously, she’s not about to let herself be man-handled or exploited by the business. And, in return, the business caved and handed her a bra. Perhaps, if more young models (and there will be more) make similar requests when faced with revealing shoots, the industry would have to change its ways by either toning down the sex or choosing older models willing to go braless.
In the meantime, let’s all stop jumping on the “She’s-Only-15″ bandwagon and save our criticism for when it actually matters.
