Rihanna’s new video for “Rude Boy” is bright and fun compared with both the dark “Russian Roulette” and “Hard,” the previous singles from her recent album, Rated R. According to MTV News, the Melina Matsoukas-directed video features Rihanna writhing around in a kaleidoscope of prints and colors, embracing her roots in Caribbean dance-hall-inspired costumes. Check it out:
Wow. I love the Andy Warhol-inspired pop art vibe, but I can’t seem to look at this video and not think about the oversexed lyrics (and how they relate to Rihanna riding on zebras and lions). Clearly she’s not going for subtlety here. “Come on rude boy, boy, can you get it up?” she asks in the first line. “Come here rude boy, boy, is you big enough?” Other gems: “Tonight I’mma let you be the captain, tonight I’mma let you do your thing.” Hmm, she must be talking about a rousing game of Battleship.
She also says she’ll let the Rude Boy take a ride — and yes, even says giddy-up. I love the beat of the song and the fun colors of the video — and I’m all for women taking control of their sexuality — but this is a little much for me. There’s a point when sexuality becomes so overdone that it just becomes funny.
Plus, isn’t Rihanna over Rude Boys?
