Barbie’s New Job: Computer Engineer!

Barbie has been many things to many people. She has been a fashion designer, a registered nurse, an astronaut, and an Olympic gold medalist. She has also been beheaded so many times the number cannot be estimated.

But now, nerdy girls and geekettes all over the world can rest easy, for Mattel recently opened up the chance to pick Barbie’s next job to Internet voters–and the voters have chose computer engineer.

From their official press release:

“All the girls who imagine their futures through Barbie will learn that engineers — like girls — are free to explore infinite possibilities, limited only by their imagination,” says Nora Lin, President, Society of Women Engineers.

Now to be fair, girls themselves chose News Anchor (News Anchor Barbie is pretty much dressed like Reece Witherspoon in Legally Blonde), but everyone else who was allowed to vote, presumably their frustrated mothers, chose the engineering job.

Barbie is depicted holding a sassy little pink laptop, wearing cute black leggings, a t-shirt with a graphic design on it, and a vest. The finishing touch? Glasses, because Barbie’s doing nerd chic now. I can hear the zillions of nerdy male voices saying that they’ve never seen a computer engineer who looked like this, but we respond, it’s not for you, is it?

Both News Anchor Barbie and Computer Engineer Barbie will be available in fall and winter of this year, respectively.

Twirlites, sound off. Is Barbie passé? Would you buy either of these for a daughter/niece/cousin?

I'm impressed. they made Barbie look smart. Sure, when my little girl is into Barbies, if she wants this one, it'll go on her gift list.

Bratz, Moxie Girls, and (for the younger ones) Groovy Girls already won this battle for my kids. I think (hope) the era of Barbie is all but over.

How funny to see my Barbie article linked here. Believe it or not, of all the hundreds of posts I have written on my site, the "Barbie Wasteland" post has gotten the most hits of any. I am glad Barbie is finally getting to be a smart and respectable young woman. At our house it is everything we can do just to keep her clothed. :)

I am an engineer, and I have worked with many engineers in my life but never one that looks like this. Tell me where I can work with babes like this and I will apply.

Oh, I could add, I have seen honeys that look like this in the engineering department but they were not engineers, they were auditors. When you see a gorgeous chick in the engineering department, make sure you time card is up to date.
