…for 6 minutes of screen time! The good people over at Culture Vulture for New York Magazine have broken it down:
New Line Cinema paid Roberts $3 million up front against 3 percent of the gross for what is little more than an extended cameo. That comes out to an astonishing $8,333 per second of screen time, or roughly $500,000 a minute.
I am not one of those girls who begins weeping or rejoicing the second she realizes a rom com (romantic comedy) or rom dram (romantic drama, and yes, I made that up) has Julia Roberts in it. I did not fall for the specious charms of Pretty Woman back in 1990 – that’s 20 years ago, ladies – in case you weren’t feeling aged enough today. But Roberts appeared in VD as a favor to Garry Marshall, who made her a star 20 years ago with that vehicle.
As usual, my sour opinions mean nothing to no one, as the general populace rushed to see Valentine’s Day its opening weekend, helping it come in first at the box office, netting about 66.9 million smackeroos. That is officially the best Valentine’s Day opening for a film – which isn’t saying much to me because Ghost Rider is in 2nd place on that list.
I went to see Crazy Heart this weekend instead of this VD fest, and noticed the guys getting dragged by their faces into the theater for Valentine’s Day. I hope they survived.
Go on Twirlites, put me in my place. Did you see this movie, did you love it? Are there any other females on the planet who don’t give two hair flips for these kinds of movies?
