Weekend Movie Preview: “Shutter Island” and “The Ghost Writer”

If you haven’t noticed, I love going to the movies. Every week as I prepare to hook you up with recent theater releases, I also get excited myself to go out and see a few. Last week, for example, it was Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins in “The Wolfman.” This week, I’ve got my sights on Leonardo DiCaprio, Mark Ruffalo, Demi Moore and Ewan MacGregor.

I first saw the preview for “Shutter Island” (Rated R) over the summer when we went to see “District 9.” Ever since I have been waiting for this movie to finally hit theaters, and this Friday, the wait is over. When a pair of U.S. Marshals (Ruffalo and DiCaprio) team up to locate an escaped mental patient, they unearth a twisted and haunted truth neither of them ever expected. “Shutter Island” is directed by Martin Scorcese, and based on a Dennis Lehane novel by the same name.

Ewan MacGregor, Pierce Brosnan and Kim Cattrall star in the mysterious thriller, “The Ghost Writer” (PG-13). In it a successful English ghostwriter takes on the opportunity of a lifetime, penning the memoirs of former British prime minister, Adam Lang. The former writer died under strange circumstances. Hidden details come to the surface via the manuscript left behind by his predecessor, details that could link Lang to the CIA. “The Ghost,” as he is known, finds that digging for the truth is a dangerous business that could cost him his life.

In “Dreamkiller” (Rated R), a psychological, Nazi-designed weapon designed during the early 1940s was reported to have been confiscated, and then destroyed. In modern times, a team of psychologists begin using a unique and controversial method to cure phobic patients. One by one, the patients begin turning up dead, and each one died just the way they feared they would.

If you’re looking for a romantic comedy this weekend, you’ll want to check out “The Good Guy” (Rated R). A young woman who is ready to settle into the good life finds herself romantically involved with a Wall Street broker and his co-worker. The games and drama that ensue are as up, down and unpredictable as the stock market itself–just the way love’s supposed to be. (And if you act now, you may be able to snag free tickets!)

Parker Posey and Demi Moore star as sisters in the comedic drama, “Happy Tears” (Rated R). The film starts when two adult sisters return home to take care of their father, who is in denial about the serious condition of his health. In their home environment, and facing the possibility of losing their father, the two women must come to terms with the bleak reality that was their childhood.

It’s a star-studded weekend on the big screen, so if you’re looking for a reason to get out of the house this weekend, why not head out to the theater? That’s where I’ll be.
