Wow, this is a blast from the past. Remember that summer of 2005, when Natalee Holloway’s picture was on the cable news channels all day, every day? According to The New York Daily News, the case of the 18-year-old who went missing in Aruba after a night of partying was reopened after Joran van der Sloot confessed to disposing of her body.

Joran van der Sloot, who was suspected in Natalee’s disappearance but never formally charged, now says he dumped the young Alabama woman’s body in a swamp on the Caribbean island, according to a report in the Dutch tabloid De Telegraaf. The statement was recorded in August 2009, but only now surfaced in the Dutch report.

Prosecutors investigating the case immediately labeled van der Sloot’s statements “very unbelievable.” Aruba’s chief prosecutor Peter Blanken said van der Sloot’s statement was “held together by lies and fantasy” and later told NBC news, “the locations, names and times he gave just did not make sense.”

Strangely, Joran has “confessed” once before. He was caught on tape roughly two years ago claiming Holloway had died after having a seizure on the beach and that he dumped her body into the ocean.

Investigators reopened the case after learning of van der Sloot’s latest statements, but later told the media that “what Van der Sloot said was not credible.”

Why would Joran do this? Does he feel guilty? I’ve been to Aruba, and I’ve seen Natalee’s name eerily scrawled on walls. I guess we’ll never know what really happened.
