Long Live Alexander McQueen!

After news of his shocking death broke on February 11, speculation immediately turned to the fate of Alexander McQueen’s beloved clothing line. What will happen to it now that the designer is gone? Well, French fashion group PPR, which owns the label, has assured adoring fans that McQueen’s line will live on.

In March, the Fall 2010 collection McQueen was working on at the time of his death, will show in Paris. No doubt it will be the highlight of Paris Fashion Week, as morbid as that might sound. But as in art and fashion, a designer’s clothes always become more desirable once they’re no longer around. It’s been reported that sales of McQueen’s clothes have jumped 1,400 percent since the designer’s death.

There’s no telling what we can expect from McQueen’s final collection. His Spring 2010 collection was not so highly lauded by fashion critics who saw it as very one-note. (Although his alien-like shoes from the collection got a lot of press based on sheer wonderment at how anyone could wear them.) But it’s what comes after the Paris show that brings so much speculation. PPR has agreed the McQueen label will go on, but who will assume the post as creative director?

I guess only time will tell. But it’s certain, who ever takes over, no one will ever replace Alexander McQueen.
