“I have had an interesting life,” says Rielle Hunter, the mistress of former Presidential candidate John Edwards. “And I have gained a lot of wisdom,” she adds. Wisdom isn’t quite the word that comes to mind while viewing her new picture in the new April GQ, however. Sans pants, Rielle is wearing a man’s shirt and pearls, cozying up next to plush children’s toys of Dora the Explorer, Barney and Kermit the Frog. The photo is obviously a nod to the fact that her relationship with Edwards resulted in a daughter, but the photo’s still downright creepy.
Rielle says that the media has their facts wrong about her. She never starred in Overboard with Goldie Hawn, she never demanded $18,000 a month for child support, she never said Elizabeth Edwards’ cancer was caused by “bad energy,” and the sister who has dished to tabloids about her hasn’t spoken to her in 17 years. What is true, she says, is that she was Jay McInerney’s muse and she was married to Kip Hunter, the son of the Boulder, CO, District Attorney during the JonBenet Ramsey case. “I live my life for wisdom, I don’t live my life for security,” she says. “I don’t live a culturally safe life.”
And while Rielle has “great respect” for Hillary Clinton, she feels differently about Oprah, who said on her show that John Edwards must have been crazy to make a sex tape when he was running for president. “First of all, that judgment she has is based on factually incorrect information, and it inspires other people to jump on the bandwagon and have that same judgment,” Rielle said. “And second, people’s judgments and opinions have only to do with themselves. This has to do with Oprah’s belief systems about sex, about public office, about men. It has all to do with Oprah and has nothing to do with John Edwards.”
