4.4-Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Los Angeles

Whoa. My bed is shaking. It turns out I wasn’t the only one who woke up at 4:04 this morning with that thought. According to The Los Angeles Times, a 4.4-magnitude earthquake struck Pico Rivera, just 11 miles east of downtown Los Angeles. The quake caused no major damage or injuries but put first-responders on alert and rattled the nerves of many disoriented, sleepy people.

Residents living near the epicenter near Pico Rivera said some items fell off shelves and tables, but authorities said they have no reports of structural damage to homes. However, the quake may have caused damage to Interstate 5 in Lakewood, where two southbound lanes buckled and were closed temporarily.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the depth of the quake was recorded at about 11 miles. Although the temblor was considered small, it was felt over a large swath of Southern California. More than 1,000 people reported feeling the quake on the USGS website.

Jeff Carr, chief of staff to L.A. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, said on Twitter that it appeared there was “no major damage in the City at this time. Good reminder that we all need 2 be prepared.”

Earthquakes with a magnitude of 4 are actually quite common in Southern California, occurring somewhere in the region every month or two. The question is…are these little quakes leading up to a bigger one?
