‘Rounder’ Women at Louis Vuitton Win Rave Reviews

By Kendra Gilbert on March 19th, 2010

The models in Louis Vuitton’s Fall 2010 fashion show in Paris looked like they were just out for a casual stroll around a fountain. Clothed in nipped-waisted dresses with full skirts, it was the noticeably-full bosoms people couldn’t stop talking about. These strolling ladies were different from the other models who usually walk the Paris runways. They were fuller, healthier and more mature. This casual daytime stroll suddenly became quite the spectacle.

Granted, “fuller” by fashion industry standards means a size 4 instead of a size 2. And in this case the fullness had more to do with cup-size than anything else. But it’s progress, right? Never have I seen so many swimsuit and lingerie models on a Parisian catwalk. It was like a Victoria’s Secret/Sports Illustrated reunion with models Adriana Lima, Karolina Kurkova, Alessandra Ambrosio and Bar Refaeli all making a pass around the fountain. Five-time Sports Illustrated cover model and 46-year-old mother of two, Elle Macpherson, closed the show much to every one’s surprise and delight. How’s that for that last word?

The only thing lacking from this show were models of any variety other than the fair-skinned kind. Marc Jacobs chipped away at the ridiculous age and weight restrictions of the fashion biz, but did little for racial diversity. Regardless, here’s what’s good: The fuller women weren’t added to the show for novelty’s sake. They filled out the clothes beautifully and walked side-by-side with more “conventional” high-fashion girls like Jessica Stam and Lily Donaldson. And everyone loved it!
