Is Gabourey Sidibe Banned from Vogue?

She’s an Oscar-nominated actress, but that doesn’t mean she’ll ever appear in Vogue. According to The Huffington Post, industry insiders had some nasty comments about Precious star Gabourey Sidibe. “She’s a joke in the fashion community,” snarked one insider. “What she wore on the red carpet at the Academy Awards wasn’t a dress, it was a tent.”

Another explained, “Vogue is venue where designers debut their best new pieces. All of which are one of a kind and sample size. It would be impossible to get a regular-sized girl in those clothes, let alone Gabby.” No one from Vogue has publicly commented, but Gabby’s exclusion from the Vanity Fair all-white, all-skinny Young Hollywood issue is another example of the fashion industry’s disapproval.

People in the media certainly have strong opinions about Gabby. You might remember Howard Stern’s comments that she was “enormous” and that she’d never work in Hollywood again. I don’t think that’s true, but fashion and acting are two related but separate worlds. It’s true that fashion designers aren’t thinking of people like Gabby when crafting their looks.

Is the vitriol really necessary, though? I wish we could just let Gabby do what she does best, act. She never said she wanted to be a model or a fashion icon.
