Planning a surprise naturally brings out the five-year-old that still dwells deep inside me. I love the thrill of keeping a secret. And few things are more fun than surprising the one you love. Some people, however, can be hard to surprise and some people have difficulty keeping a surprise a secret.
If you are planning a surprise for the un-surprisable or if you are the one who just can’t keep a lid on a surprise, these strategies will help you plan a memorable and surprising moment.
1. Erase the paper trail. If you are trying to surprise the un-surprisable, you cannot leave a paper trail. And you certainly can’t afford to leave an e-paper trail either. Be sure to hide any reservation confirmations, printed registrations, etc., outside of your home if possible. You can bury them in the backyard or leave them with a friend. If you share a computer, don’t forget to delete your web-browser history and empty your cache’ prior to logging out.
2. Resist the urge to hint. If you’re like me and more excited for the surprise to happen than a kid before Christmas, resist the urge to talk about the surprise. Even telling a person that you are planning a surprise event or gift for them can lead to questions which can ultimately lead to them uncovering the plan before they’re supposed to.
3. Pay attention to the details. Planning a surprise means you’ve been paying attention to small hints regarding what the other person likes for a long time. When the person you’re planning to surprise casually mentions how much they love the circus or a new band, you must make a mental note and put that information to use when it’s time to craft a surprise plan.
