Michelle Obama Focuses on Exercise at the White House Easter Egg Roll 2010

Ready, Set, Go! That’s the theme of the White House Easter Egg Roll this year. According to The TODAY Show, first lady Michelle Obama put a healthy spin on the Easter tradition that dates back to 1878, adding basketball, yoga and healthy eating activities to the special event.

The Obama family has welcomed thousands of children to usually off-limits south lawn of the White House today for egg rolling and hunting contests. They rounded up plenty of eggs to prepare: the White House will provide 14,500 hard-boiled and dyed eggs. An additional 4,500 will be left for children to color at a dyeing station.

As she welcomed some of the 30,000 guests to the White House Monday, Mrs. Obama said she hoped children would have fun while learning about how they could lead healthier lives.

The Obamas have also changed the ticketing procedure. It used to be that on the weekend before the Easter Egg Roll, anyone who wanted tickets had to wait in line outside a booth near the White House, regardless of the weather. And getting a ticket was not guaranteed. When the Obamas first celebrated Easter in the White House last year, they began an online lottery system to distribute tickets.
