When did Gray Hair Become Chic?

Women go to great lengths to look young. Given this quest for eternal youth, it’s no wonder the mere sight of a gray hair sends them rushing to the drug store to grab a box of hair color. So it’s confusing to see young trendsetters these days sporting streaks of gray hair. Is it premature aging? No. These silver locks are intentional

I knew it! The beautiful people were getting their fashion inspiration from the Golden Girls all along. And now the secret is out! Personally, I think it takes just the right person to pull off gray hair without looking like a granny. The gray streaks work best when part of an edgy look, the kind only magazine editors and rock-star offspring seem to pull off with any success. When the bespectacled 13-year-old fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson showed up at New York Fashion Week with a gray bob, she looked like a someone’s nana who’d happened upon a miraculous face cream.

One woman who was sporting a gray streak before it became a hot trend is “What Not to Wear” host Stacy London. And her’s is all natural, which she isn’t afraid to admit or embrace. Good for her. So while “Golden Girl” gray may be the hair color of the moment, something tells me that the girls just doing it for fun wont find it so amusing when the color becomes permanent. Luckily, the drug store shelves are fully stocked when that moment comes.

One Response to When did Gray Hair Become Chic?

  1. I started going grey in my mid thirties. My step mother had gorgeous pearl grey hair in her forties (always with a VERY GOOD HAIRCUT) and I had hoped even as a teenager that my hair would look as chic as hers when I got older.

Here’s a portrait that was taken for my business when I was 39 -as you can see, I’m very grey:

I sometimes get anxious about my hair and wonder if I should colour it, but my staff, friends and family are aghast every time I suggest it. I have women I don’t even know compliment my hair colour quite often – it helps keep me strong!
