How to Cope with an Inappropriate Crush

It can’t be helped, at some point a Mr Unattainable will walk into your life in the form of a boss, best friend’s boyfriend, or married co-worker/doctor/mailman and throw you head-over-heels in crush despite your best efforts and the fact that he’s off limits. What to do?

  • Keep your wits about you. Take a deep breath and don’t let the intoxicating effects of forbidden love impede your judgment and turn you into a crazed stalker or ‘other woman.’
  • Evaluate the situation and determine why the crush is inappropriate — if you’re fantasizing about your hot single boss it’s a lot different than pining after your best friend’s husband.
  • Weigh the consequences of indulgence. Would you lose a friend? Compromise your morals? Tear apart your family or lose your job? These are all solid reasons to back off and taking the time to think about them ahead of time can help you get control and curb your feelings before they get out of control.
  • Take control by making a decision one way or the other: pursue the crush or ignore it until it goes away. Obviously in most cases you should ignore it but if you decide to go for it at least when it all blows up in your face you’ll be able to say you dove in on purpose with your eyes wide open.
