The 14th cycle of Tyra Banks’ hit show America’s Next Top Model (ANTM) came to an end last night when super-skinny contestant Krista White took home the coveted title.
Krista - who had tried out a few times before but never won - was up against some pretty tough competitors last night, including 23-year-old New Yorker Angelea, 22-year-old Raina from Minnesota and 21-year-old Texan Alexandra.
While many fans of the show were thrilled to see the high-fashion model win gold, others were outraged that Tyra and the judges would choose someone so unhealthily skinny to act as a role model to other aspiring models. Isn’t that the exact message Tyra claims she doesn’t want to send to young women?
There wouldn’t be as much controversy surrounding the judge’s decision to cast Krista as winner, except that Tyra often preaches about how she hates that the modeling industry is full of stick-thin women who feel the need to starve themselves to look a certain way. Just because they chose a plus-size girl (Whitney – who happens to be the most successful of the previous ANTM winners) one time doesn’t mean they’re not still sending the wrong message. One plus-sized winner out of 14 cycles hardly seems balanced to us.
Congratulations, Tyra, you proved once again that only the super-small models have what it takes to take home your prestigious title.
Personally, we would have picked Angelea to win – even though she couldn’t even secure the runner up position (Raina did).

Krista won the competition on her own merits. She was the best model overall. And some people are just naturally thin—it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are unhealthy. We don’t know, maybe she tries but is unable to put weight on?? I think it is ridiculous to insinuate that a plus sized model should have been chosen because only one has ever won.It is a competition and is based on skill and potential. And I agree that Angelea was great(and definitely should have been runner up), but her attitude was not the best so I’m sure Tyra would have had a problem having her represent ANTM. Give Krista the credit that she deserves.

Krista had the talents and the skills to earn the coveted position of ANTM. She is extremely small boned, but by no means I do not see unhealthy on her. I do agree as well that Angelea should have been her competion for the title, however her attitude was just too unpleasant to have to deal with and she was told several times throughout the competition that this is an important factor when being selected at Go sees etc. Congratulations Krista! You persevered for the title and it paid off !

It’s kind of ridiculous to assume that skinny means she’s unhealthy. I know some people that are stick thin and just cannot put on weight. It’s just the way their metabolism/body is. Just like some of the rest of us who have trouble taking the weight off. Krista hands down was the best model on the show, end of story.
And I’m sorry, Angelea had the most ridiculously bad attitude. Did you see her on the show?? She was a hot mess.
Besides, just because Angelea looks bigger than Krista in that CoverGirl photo doesn’t mean that Angelea is not super skinny as well. She is still a tiny girl, just like the rest of them. Just just was a little bigger than Krista and her face is fuller. They carry what little weight they both have differently.

I am a naturally thin woman and I am often criticized by women in a fuller state than I am. I have always been thin and the majority of my immediate family consists of thin women. What I can’t understand is why woman are always judged by things like physical attributes. It’s always “too skinny” or “too fat” and the funny thing about it is the majority of the criticism is from the opposing end. Maybe if people would stop trying to find fault in others and really look deep and identify their own insecurities, it would be less blog post like this one..
I agree with Lynette. Moreover, I think if Krista were White we wouldn’t be having this discussion on did she deserve to win. She was the obvious winner after getting best pic 3 times in a row. Why can’t people except that black is beautiful & in this case more talented than the rest – she had the personality, the bone structure, the walk & she took awesome pics – she almost brought Andre to tears. i am also naturally thin,and was going for krista right off the jump..not because shes apparently that skinny too,which to be honest i barely noticed..but because i think she has gorgeous skin and photograhs beautifully,she deserved it,she won more challenges and more best pics then anyone
Krista won the majority of the competitions, she looked beautiful in all of the shots during the latter part of the competition and we all act the fool when no one is looking, but she presented herself well. Black folks don’t starve themselves folks. If you are hungry you eat. No bulimia for us. She is a beautiful BLACK woman and we are proud she won. Angelea was indeed beautiful and I know a modeling agency has picked her up. Yea ! Krista, Philly in the house.. Yea ! Tyra for another great season.
i can’t beleive that she won, i think she looks like a man!!!! Raina was a good example of what alot of women really look like, not super skinny, i may not watch this program again if super skinny “girls” that looks like guys are going to win!! horrible role models for the teens of today, they already have enough pressure from movie stars, i thought tyra was trying to change that look of super skinny models, guess i was wrong.
I feel the right choice was made with Krista. she had the poise and the right attitude throughout the season. She consistently had the best pictures and she knew how to use her body in all of them. She had trouble using her face in certain pictures but that comes with practice. I didn’t think she was too skinny she looks naturally small boned. Angelea attitude got worse the more challenges Krista won. Congrat’s Krista you deserve to be ANTM!!!
I think Krista deserved to win after Angelea and alashia left. because I wanted one of them to win either way it went i happy for all the contestants this cycle cause they did there best. I love them all except Brenda and Jessica.
I have to agree I thought Krista was mannish looking in the real life footage but then a lot of models look rather plain without their hair and makeup on. While she wasn’t my favorite I think the camera really loved her and she fit the model clothes well. I loved Raina but I don’t think she photographed as well as Krista did on a lot of the photos.

Latoria, it was angelea acting “ghetto”. I think most people miss the point of ANTM. Who can sell the products? it’s not about miss congeniality or being the prettiest.
Krista totally deserved to win. She was the best at all challenges, plus her personality shined. It seems people are automatically prejudiced against her for being thin.
Your article suggests that heavier models should win just because of their weight, not their merit.
I would have loved to see Angelea win. Just like everyone else, I do think that she had a bit of an attitude problem, which took her of the running. Or rather, she took herself out the running. She could have pushed past the attitude! But since Angelea did not win, I think that Krista was a good choice to be the next ANTM. She constently took great pictures, and was consistent. Regardless of how anyone feels about her, you have to give her props for the desire she had to win. She wanted it more than the rest. Even though she was a bit arrogant about it. She definately was not my favorite to win but there’s always the next cycle!!
I am glad Krista won, if you work and she did it pays off. Whether it is man or wo-man or animal. At the end of the day who ever worked it, won it. Oh and Ah Nina it is Tyra’s show wanna think about it!

Another disappointing turnout. It sure looks fixed to me. Andre was the worst judge, would rather see Ms. J back, at least Ms. J never seemed to have made a decision prior to the end of the contest, something you cannot say for Andre, as you could tell he had already made his choice a long time ago. I thought Jessica the best, the prettiest and one of the nicest and was disappointed to see her voted off.
Her size has nothing to do with it! There are alot of skinny women that are gorgeous…she on the other hand looks like a man and I would of liked to see Jessica win.

Raina was by far the prettiest, most real, most personable, and most professional of the entire bunch. And, she is the only one of the last for with whom I would want to have a conversation. I belive that the reason she did not win is because “white” is the minority in America today.
Krista has undeniable modeling talent, however, I would have chosen Alexandra to be one of the top three and I would have picked Raina as the winner. Angelea needs to work on her attitude and clean up her profanity-not professional. I would not want to buy anything that Krista promoted in a magazine, but I would love to see her on the runway…

I agree with lynette, except that they showed pics of krista in 2003 when she decided to try out for ANTM. She was thin, but not THAT thin. It’s not natural.

We don’t watch this show; but, looking at these photos the brown-skin model on left pose is better than light-skin model on right; we can see the entire background of gym and brown-skin model on the left; model sell products for companies; compare both photos.
Yes, Krista deserved to win; models sell products; we can see Krista (the model) and the gym equipment in the background; if she was selling memberships to work out at this gym, we would probably become members. The gym equipment looks really great to work out on. The photo with the other model in it is not sellable.

I don’t particularly care about the whole too skinny issue or race. She won, and that’s what happened. The only thing that really bugs me is that in the picture up there, Krista’s eyes look dead. And how much does Tyra alway talk about having life in your eyes and everything, no matter the picture subject. I haven’t seen her other pictures, but based on the covergirl ad up there I wouldn’t buy whatever product up there simply because of her eyes. It freaks me out a little bit.

I’m white and have plenty of butt and lips, and I have a nice figure and looks. And so do most of the women in my family. im not saying she’s too thin to be a model but too damn ugly and i think raina should have won.Though i don’t think angelea is that great looking, i feel she probably could have won as well.
I hate the fact that Krista was on about “I don’t see any black women like me out there.. I wanna represent” no girl, you just wanna win, don’t lie!! And there are plenty of beautiful black women out there. Krista was ugly, whether she was thin or not. She didn’t have the best photos, she often looked a little drag. And Angelea, I don’t even know why that girl was in the competition. I loved Jessica, she never took a bad picture and she had a good walk. Alasia was also particularly good, with a bt more help and work she would have done well.

I think America shouldn’t vote for ANTM. Simply because a girl who looks like Krista would stand no chance. The focus appears to be on her weight and beautiful black skin. Forget that, she is incredibly talented and she kicked butt. America Idol is a waste of tv simply because America votes. What do most of us know about modeling or music? Nothing. I think the voting should be done by professionals. They are people who are experienced and trained in the field. Many people on American Idol are sent home because they weren’t the people of America’s choice. They are definitely going to vote for who they like, and many times it has nothing to do with talent. I’ve seen some competitors go home when they should have won. One example…Jennifer Hudson. Tyra keep doing what you do. You and other professionals be the judge. The last thing I would want is to see a great show screwed up because people who have no clue what modeling and runway is. Thumbs up to you and the judges. Great job guys!!!! Krista…hang tough. You will confront much more criticism such as some posted here. You are beautiful, and you bagged that competition!!!!!!
Krista proved n earned her title, she is very professional , confident and she gaved the judges exactly n more than what they asked for and you all know it! she was one of the best performers ive seen she nailed it all the time, it wouldnt be fair to try n make a plus size win because u feel sorry stop hating none of the plus sizes that was on this show gave a good enough performance to last, what probably need to be done is they have and plus-size top model show only. But Krista God bless her she was determined to win n she did. Congrats. Instead of lookin at her size take a lesson from her strong spirit and determination and stop tryin to find something negative n people, We are all beautiful in God’s eyes anyway.
Whats remarkable are the few comments that she won because she was black, or they are not as hard on the black models. Are you all fucking serious!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is the closest many Black women skinny, fat, pretty or ugly will get in this industry. Imagine how many Black woman were looked over in this industry for years simply because they were black damn how pretty and talented they were! The racial comments are weak.
This still does not excuse Krista for being arrogant and a show off. A little humility in victory wins the hearts of others not being a show off. Tyra has lasted this long because she is sweet and humble about her successes. Not like Kimora Lee and the rest of the I’m so wonderful has beens.
I watched the rerun yesterday and Tyra interviewed Krista & Raina before they selected the winner. Krista said she wanted to tell Dark-skinned girls they could be beautiful too because of how society has put down dark-skinned girls Krista thought she could show them that they can make it and are beautiful too. Tyra told Krista this is not just about you but this is bigger than you. Right then I knew Tyra wanted Krista to win to make a point that dark girls could feel good about themselves. Everyone over 20 something have seen how people over look the darker girls and treat them less than. I think the Judges knew all along they were going to pick Krista and make her the Poster child and advocate for dark skinned girls to level the playing field.
However, Raina Hein won the hearts of America. Not for her beauty or modeling skills alone but for the humble way she handled the loss of winning the America’s Next Top Model title and for her sweet mannerism. Krista was an arrogant show off. Maybe this is what has turned people off and not the dark pigment of her skin tone.

Forgot to say Tyra agreed with Krista that dark skin girls should be recognized as beautiful nothing wrong with that but Krista needs to learn how to be beautiful on the inside too and I hope she has gotten that chip off her boney shoulders.
I forgot to say I’m black and aging. However, I had a uniquely different family. All of the men in my family preferred dark skin women and frequently put down light skin girls even my dad could pass for white but married mom who was dark skinned. I came out light skinned like my dad but the dark skin women in my family were preferred like my mom.I was not treated that well. I had discrimination in reverse that few people know about but it happens even if you never heard of the light skinned girls who got mistreated. Yes it’s a reality. I wish Oprah and Tyra had shows on that. I’m also in my fifties by the way!
There have been many questionable cycle winners, but hands down Krista, Nicole, and Teyona all COMPLETELY DESERVED to win their cycles. I was not a Krista fan, but the facts are the facts and she knew her stuff.
