Anna Malova, Former Miss Russia, Arrested
Anna Malova, a former Miss Russia beauty queen, has been arrested in New York. According to MyFoxNY, she was charged Tuesday with criminal possession of narcotics, forgery and criminal impersonation of a physician. Police apprehended Anna after she walked out of a pharmacy on 6th Avenue in Greenwich Village. The 38 year-old acted calmly as she was taken away. What is it with beauty queens and scandals?
The pharmacist said Anna’s doctor believed Anna stole a prescription pad and wrote out fake prescriptions for painkillers. Anna was praised for being a medical doctor in her native Russia when she won the crown and made the top 10 in teh Miss Universe pageant 12 years ago, but she is not licensed to practice medicine here in the United States. Police actually arrested Anna three months ago for the same crime and charged her with petty larceny.
Prescription drug abuse is a growing problem in the United States. According to CNN, the latest government figures show abuse of some of the strongest types of prescription painkillers is up 400 percent over the decade. Deaths from these drugs are up 160 percent over just five years. On May 11, the White House launched a new drug strategy focusing on prevention and treatment. It also gives real attention to prescription drug abuse, which is a unique problem because the drugs can initially be obtained legally.
