Jennifer Lopez was planning to spend her 41st birthday performing at a new luxury hotel on the Mediterranean island of Cyrpus, but has cancelled her show due to the political conflicts there. According to The Huffington Post, the island is violently divided between the Greek Cypriots in the breakaway north and the Turkish Cypriots, who denounced the move. The two sides are currently locked in fruitless peace talks, and the US State Department does not recognized the northern half, the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)” (Turkey is the only country that does).
The incendiary ethnic rivalry has burned for decades. An official at the Cratos Premium hotel near the northern coastal resort of Kyrenia said that J-Lo had signed a contract to perform as part of opening celebrations and would have arrived “with her friends and family.” She was going to make $3 million for the appearance – not bad!
But then after “a full review of the relevant circumstances in Cyprus,” her peeps realized the money wasn’t worth it. ”Jennifer Lopez would never knowingly support any state, country, institution or regime that was associated with any form of human rights abuse,” the statement said. It added that it was a team decision “that reflects our sensitivity to the political realities of the region.”
Greek Cypriots took the decision as a “a victory,” praising J-Lo on Facebook. They created a forum titled, ‘Against Jennifer Lopez Performing in Occupied Cyprus’ and wrote, “Thank you Jennifer!! You are true champion of Morality, Human Rights, Democracy and Freedom!”
