Whoopi Goldberg Says Mel Gibson is “Not a Racist”

By Amanda Pendolino on July 13th, 2010

Mel Gibson isn’t anyone’s favorite person anymore, now that we’ve all heard his disturbing and violent rant in which he launched C-words, N-words and F-bombs at Oksana Grigorieva, the mother of his 8 year-old daughter. And it’s not an isolated incident, considering the actor also went on an anti-semitic tirade against a Jewish police officer in 2006. But on The View yesterday, Whoopi Goldberg says that although she doesn’t defend his words, she doesn’t think he’s a racist.

“I know Mel, and I know he’s not a racist,” Whoopi said. “I have had a long friendship with Mel. You can say he’s being a bonehead, but I can’t sit and say that he’s a racist having spent time with him in my house with my kids. I don’t like what he’s done, make no mistake.”

When Joy Behar asked Whoopi if she thought he was anti-Semitic because of the 2006 incident, Whoopi called him “an ass” but then pulled back and blamed it on alcohol. “Drunks say stupid stuff to people all the time — because they’re drunk, they’re out of control, they are not thinking, they are idiotic. I can’t say anything about people like that because I know what they’re like when they’re drunk. This rant? I don’t think he’s drunk on this rant.”

Whoopi ended by saying, “I’m not defending Mel. I’m simply saying I don’t see him as [a racist] because that’s not been my experience with him.”

Racist or not, I think Mel needs some serious professional help. What do you guys think?
