The posters are kinda lame, with Aly Michalka staring at you with a creepy, blank expression. But word is that CW’s new cheerleading show Hellcats, which premieres tonight at 9, is actually pretty cool. Aly (of Aly & AJ) stars as Marti Perkins, an ambitious pre-law student who joins the Hellcats cheer squad to keep her scholarship. A former gymnast, Marti adds some more intense moves to cheerleading.
“What happens is that she ends up integrating her own sense of style into the team and makes it much more loose and groovy and more street and not so rigid and old school, classic cheerleader,” Aly said. Check out a preview of the show:
A brunette Ashley Tisdale plays cheer captain and Marti’s new roommate Savannah Monroe, a petite, preppy Texan who takes Marti under her wing. (Let’s hope she can tone down that brash High School Musical persona).
The show is set in Memphis, where football and cheerleading are a big effing deal. Since it’s on the CW, Hellcats is bound to be a lot flashier than my beloved Friday Night Lights, but I still have hope that the show will be one of this season’s must-watch dramas. What do you think?
