The oldest child of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and television journalist Maria Shriver says she was first aware of her body in the fourth grade, when she began comparing her shape to the other girls around her. That freaked her out.
To share her story, and help others, Katherine has written a book, “Rock What You’ve Got: Secrets To Loving Your Inner and Outer Beauty From Someone Who’s Been There and Back,” which arrives in bookstores on Tuesday.
Like most girls, Katherine considers her middle school years her ‘awkward phase’ and stressed about keeping her weight under 100 lbs.
Today, Katherine is 5 foot 8 and a size 6 – she credits her close relationship with her mother for helping her through those awkward years.
“My mom was always good with me. She always checked in with me. I had the best relationship with my mom. I still do. I talk to her four times a day,” she says. The two even attend yoga and spinning classes together, activities that Katherine calls her “stress relievers.”
“I sweat everything out” she writes.
It also helps that her family sets a great example for healthy living – Mom Maria works out in the morning, while Dad Arnold works out twice a day, once in the morning and then again after work. “We are really family-oriented people. We go on family bike rides. We play tennis together.”
They eat healthy too, but Katherine is not one to shy away from a cookie if she wants it. (Amen!)
If she does start thinking negatively about herself, Katherine says she focuses on turning her thoughts around. “I think about all the things I’m grateful for. Then I go about my day.”
