Their violent fight was a wake-up call, Amber Portwood’s father tells Radar Online. After Amber hit, kicked and punched her on-again-off-again fiancé Gary Shirley in a recently aired episode of MTV’s Teen Mom, the couple entered counseling, and has been receiving help in the months since the incident.
The help, according to Amber’s father Shawn, was all their idea. “…they’re a young couple, they run into roadblocks and they get over it. Some people get help, some people don’t. In this case they’re getting help because they’re smart kids.”
As Twirlit first reported, a police investigation was launched after Amber violently attacked Gary in front of their young daughter Leah. Gary did not retaliate physically, just continually asking Amber, “Are you done?”
Shawn –who has apparently never actually watched an episode of Teem Mom – says Amber’s seemingly aggressive behavior is uncharacteristic of his 20-year old daughter. “It surprised me that it was even on TV and it was shown on TV, to be honest with you” he told Radar Online. “I think that MTV should’ve used better judgment, that’s all I’ve got to say.”
Now, Shawn reveals, he’s got a positive outlook for Gary and Amber’s future.
“I think one day they will [get married] hopefully. They might work it out and it looks like they’re sure trying to work it out.”

Ok.. You think MTV should have used better judgement?? How about your daughter should have used better judgement! She didn’t just hit him once she repeatedly attacked him. Maybe MTV aired this show to show that domestic violence goes both ways. It is a good example that a big guy like Gary can be abused physically & mentally (i hate using good but i’m sure it’s understood what i meant). It’s abuse to Leah to scream and yell all the time …how will Leah feel in 10-20 years when she sees how much her mother resented her and cussed at her as a baby. It’s a bad situation and maybe Shawn should watch his daughter’s behavior!

The girl is a PSYCHO! I am shocked that MTV continues to film her acting like this. She needs to be put in a mental institution. And she sure doesn’t deserve to be a mother. That kid is going to be screwed up if she continues to have custody. Gary was right to take her daughter away from her!

Personaly i think amber is one of the worst mothers ever! How could she ever let another man other than her babies dad change her DAUGHTERS diaper?! Especially some random guy who is a fucking loser whom she has only been dating for a couple weeks?! WTF… Someone really need to call some type of child protective services on her because she is an unfit, bad temper, stupid ass excuse of a mother. I feel bad for Amber. She’s stuck in a “poor me” attitude. She seems to need anger management courses. Also, MTV doesn’t need “better judgement”, Amber does. There is no excuse for physically attacking anyone. Period.

The bottom line is it takes two. That being said, Gary…who is constantly hoveling back to her…needs to leave…indefinitely. She needs to work on her issues and he needs to work on his (Co-dependency)…I see a very nice guy who will put up with anything just so he’s not alone in the world. That’s being co-dependent. I see a girl, who obvioulsy has a father who enables her…when he uses comments like she’s never been like that before and that MTV should get a reality wakeup call. (That’s taking the blame off of her…treating her like SHE’S the victim…when in fact…Gary and Leah are). Gary CAN CHOOSE to leave (with Leah…and trust me, after seeing this footage…they’d be more than thrilled he took Leah with him and provide him the assistance he needed while insisting through court order she get some much needed help BEFORE she was able to be a mother to Leah). Gary enables Amber everytime he goes running back to her (which in her mind, doesn’t give her enough time to look inward and say…”Hey, maybe there actually IS something wrong with me!” You have two different people with two differing issues, Gary’s is less violent but insidious in a subtle way and you have Amber who IS violent and doesn’t have an issue sharing it with everyone…including Leah, her daughter. They both require help…but I believe Gary could get away with some counseling sessions and Amber…well…she needs intensive Psychotherapeutic intervention…The question remains, will she get it?
