Glee stars Lea Michele and Dianna Agron posed in their underwear with Cory Monteith for a racy new GQ cover shoot – and the Parents Television Council isn’t thrilled. In the spread, titled “Glee Gone Wild,” the girls are living out the “naughty schoolgirl” fantasy while Cory (strangely) remains fully clothed. Certain shots are playful, but others – especially Lea Michele’s solo photos – are quite pornographic, perhaps even a little pedophiley.
Here’s PTC President Tim Winter’s take, via E! News: “It is disturbing that GQ, which is explicitly written for adult men, is sexualizing the actresses who play high school-aged characters on Glee in this way. It borders on pedophilia. Sadly, this is just the latest example of the overt sexualization of young girls in entertainment. Many children who flocked to High School Musical have grown into Glee fans. They are now being treated to seductive, in-your-face poses of the underwear-clad female characters posing in front of the school lockers, one of them opting for a full-frontal crotch shot. By authorizing this kind of near-pornographic display, the creators of the program have established their intentions of the show’s direction. And it isn’t good for families. With a demonstrated market of eager fans for an entertaining, musical-themed program like Glee, we wonder why the show’s creators feel the need for such graphic sexualization of women. Interestingly, the photos of the male character showed him wearing a shirt, tie and vest.”
Now, I think the photographer and magazine are more to blame that the show’s creators, but I agree with his points. Why is Cory fully clothed while the women are so scantily clad? And while Lea and Dianna are 24, and Cory is 28, they are clearly channeling the young characters they play in both the wardrobe and high-school setting of the photo shoot.
What do you think? Is the shoot inappropriate?
