Taylor Swift performed her hit Back to December from her new album Speak Now at tonight’s 2010 CMA Awards but there was something weird and unexplainable that happened at the end of her performance.
Did anyone else see the moment at the very end of the performance where the camera flips to Dierks Bentley then quickly goes back to Taylor who seems to be tearing up and then mouths the word “what” as though she had seen something or someone in the audience.
By now, most people know that her song Back to December was written about her old flame Taylor Lautner. The song is about Taylor’s regret for letting him go and how she wishes she could turn back time and do things differently. It appears to be a very emotional song for the young artist which may have something to do with her reaction at the end.
But who was in the audience and what happened at the end of her performance? If anyone has any insight at all, I would really appreciate it. I am (as I’m sure all you other Taylor fans are) very confused with Taylor’s performance tonight.

Update: As some of the comments below suggest, many believe that Taylor actually got booed at the end of her performance. I can’t confirm this but it would make sense as to why Taylor had such a mad look on her face when she said “what.”
Update 2: Taylor’s publicist says “What?” was a response to the audience’s enthusiastic reaction to her performance of “Back to December.”

Taylor could have had that reaction to a standing O simply because she is a very humble girl. When you aren’t expecting a good or bad reaction there’s no telling how you’ll react.

I dont think that whatever it is. Its not a big deal. I mean, she sold a billion CDs. I dont think she has to worry about booing or a standing ovation.
Oh and also, if you watch the very end after she says “what” — around 4:16/4:17, you can see she’s actually starting to smile, but the camera flicks to a wide shot and the curtain comes down. Clearly she was in disbelief that they were giving her a standing ovation (hence the look on her face when saying “what?”) and then she’s happy at their reaction to her song.

Taylor is a sweet girl who has gotten caught up in an unbelievable marketing campaign by taking a singer with little talent and promoting her to stardom. Even her songs are written with a female ghost writer. Check out her one chord guitar(prop) playing. I think the CMA people are making a statement by only nominating her in one category despite all the record sales.

I personally dont think it was for the standing ovation because it wasn’t a happy, disbelief “what”. Okay aside from all this hooplah.. I just realised that in the second chorus instead of singing “I go back to December, turn around and change my own mind”, she sung the 1st chorus (“I go back to December, turn around and make it alright”) again. At first I thought maybe she got distracted and forgot or something.. but after the bridge/ at the end of the song when she sings both lines, she only sung the first chorus version. Maybe she’s come to terms with the fact that they won’t get back together and they have both moved on, as opposed to when she wrote it and hoped for a reconciliation. Thoughts?

The performers wear earpieces. My impression was she heard something through her earpiece, something from a stage director upset her. I thought later that they might have had trouble getting the curtain down, so she and the orchestra would be stuck there in front of the audience. And she was looking at a stagehand or director, like: WHAT? I definitely think it had to do with what was going on onstage, not the audience.
Taylor did a great job singing. She has taken past criticism and seems to be working on her voice. I think that shows what kind of a performer she is…she takes a negative and works to turn it into a positive. Way to go Taylor.

when I looked back at the video, I noticed that taylor and some audience look at different direction, where most of the audience looking at her giving applause. something happen at that spot where they looking at, “streaker” make sense.
She is lovely and the song was beautiully emotional- it is SO SO obvious that it was a reaction to somethong she heard from her earpiece. But the show was “off” difficult to watch in some cases- the attempts at humor were painful to watch. Weird all around.

Watch her eyes. I think she saw that they showed Dierks (instead of a wide audience shot), and I think that surprised her, like it insinuated something. The ‘what’ translated: “What? Why Dierks? We’re not together and the song isn’t about him.” Carrie saw her mom on the monitors after her performance, and they caught her surprise and mouthed comment, too.
There was definitely some booing. I was in my kitchen listening to this performance came in at the end and heard the reaction. Im sure Nashville is a tough crowd and not everyone loves Taylor. There are hundreds of kids with just as much if not more raw talent that deserve that shot. I do think she is way too overrated. People stood up and people also booed. You can most definitely hear it!

I think she was booed.. as well as notice the curtin comes down right away… it was a brat reaction IMO. Probably another attempt to get public sympathy as she got when Kanye did that. Let’s face it, the girl is not talented and she has rode the sympathy as far as it will go….. she was just looking for another “poor me” moment to extend her stardom. I also keep replaying it on my dvr and after Taylor mouthed the “WHAT” with that upset look on her face and then it goes to Carrie…Carrie looks stunned too and it takes Carrie a few extra seconds to start talking like she too was stunned by something. And No one is talking which is very very weird! It was not a reponse to a standing ovation or a boo, it was clearly something else going on.

I have rewatched it over and over. Hating every minute of it knowing that every hit YouTube gets on this makes her look popular….just as with the Kanye thing. In reality, America just likes to watch train wrecks.
I do not see a “standing ovation” as is claimed. I do hear a few obvious “boo’s”. Taylor promotes her new album saying “she’s nameing names”… then she names nobody. A nice trick she played to sell her album that fell very short.
If you listen to the song “December”..it’s basically about a woman who did a guy wrong..and promises if he’d come back she’d show him love. However it is clear in this song the guy wants nothing to do with her. Her reaction came right after they showed Dierks Bently on the monitor….. could he have been the guy in that song and did she get pissed someone “outed” it and named a name she promised to do and never did?
At any rate…she’s a spoiled brat…not talented..can’t carry a tune without going flat here and there.
She’s just trying to find another reason to get people to notice her and keep her in the spotlight. She rose to fame on pity…not talent. She should really thank Kanye…nobody even knew who she was until that moment.

What happened was Bentley stood up and motioned that “someone”??? was crazy (finger doing circle around his head). Perhaps he meant Taylor’s old boyfriend was crazy not to take her back.
This is what happened. Simple You can see one lady in a blue dree standing over to the right of the screen. That does not constitute a “standing ovation”
The curtain comes down and people began standing to get the fake snow off of their nice clothes and expensive hair styles. Taylor mistook this for the beginning of a standing ovation and reacted in her offended “What” because she thought they were dropping the curtain on her standing ovation. Poor her…there they go again stealing her spotlight.
Take a bow and go away already Taylor and stop acting like the spoiled entitled brat you are. The pity train that you rode to stardom has derailed.

We all know the song was about Taylor Lautner. You could tell Taylor put her heart and emotions into singing that song. It was definitely personal for her. We are dealing with 2 very popular young stars, and there is a huge following of Lautner who feel he was wronged, rightly so…
We all heard the boos, whether we admit it or not. This was the CMA’s, not the VMA’s…these were HER people. For someone in her position, so emotionally raw at that moment, to feel betrayed by her own had to be a slap in the face. I am pretty sure that anyone in their right mind would have reacted the same if not worse.
Oh, and “Sky” whateverthehellyournameisatthemoment, it is obvious you have no clue. The whole reason Kanye was upset is because Taylor’s popularity won over Beyonce, which was an enormous feat…not something a nobody, no talent could ever do.

ok i personaly love taylor swift and thinks shes really talented and her performance was amazing. but watching her sing that song she really didnt look to choked up about it. The way she said what she looked more confused then angry i think there was something wrong with the set, sound, something! and someone was trying to tell her. Some of you guys are ridiculous.. all this hate for taylor swift saying she rode a sympathy train + has no talent? How about she writes her own songs and just sold 1 million records in the first week which is unheard of this day in age in the music industry. I’d say she’s pretty talented, not everyone sounds dead on live all the time but atleast she actually performs live and writes her own music to some degree.

it was becuz someone in the behind the scenes said that now she could go home becuz she lost female vocalist of the year. and she heard it through her earpiece. she’s not so stuck up that she would tear up over not having a huge standing ovation. she had a great performance, but that’s where the what came from.
Reba was HORRIBLE Why would she even attempt to sing that song. Nobody really sounded good I don’t know if it was the auto-tune, or the accoustics of the building, but whatever it was something was DEFINATELY off.They can spin this Taylor Swift thing any way they want to, but thats not a “shocked” because she got a standing ovation look on her face thats a look of I’m PISSED.
It looks like she said huh and then what like there was some confusion going on, I don’t think she was reacting to the audience. They did have a camera guy dart across the screen at 4:05, he may have been trying to tell her something.

OK, for one thing I agree, Kid Rock is not country and sounds awful.. like he’s about to croak! But Taylor looked surprised and mad, I think someone did say something in her earpiece, like that maybe they couldn’t hear her. That would definitely be her reaction if she thought she had just sung that song and no one even heard it… but she did wonderfully! She is beautiful, and super talented. I think Carrie Underwood is probably just jealous. She is probably the one that told her they couldn’t hear her… just a guess, but makes sense.

Okay. I don’t know what happened. I’m sure it has nothing to do with her getting booed, seeing Tayler or Kanye, Carrie Underwood, or getting her butt stuck to the piano bench (as previous comments have suggested). I’m sure every performer has gotten booed before. No performer, in their right mind, would react to a single boo from a crowd in the thousands.
To me, it looked like Taylor heard something in her ear piece. The reason I think this is because she started acting upset when she was facing her piano, not when she looked to the crowd.
If she did say “what” because of a standing ovation it would make sense, but no one is standing except her mom. (Pause at 4:20 and look at the bottom right hand corner) Also, she looks worried or pissed when she said it… not happy.
to me all I heard was applause for her up until the curtain came down I heard 2 or so boos but they seemed to be a reaction to the curtain coming down.
I LOL cause I thought it was a follow up from the Faith Hill deal at a former CMA. I would like to think thats she remebers this and has a since of humur.
Its because she got a standing ovation from a certain fraction of the audience. You can notice at the end of the video that some people are trickling out of their seats to give her a standing applause. She was just taken aback by this because she felt honored to be so highly applauded by the most distinguished group of country music artists.

I was there and heard a voice yell something. I was not close enough to see her reaction live. There was some obnoxious members of the audience all night. Some more noticeable than others. The sound did seem low on some of the performances. As I have always observed, live is nothing like a studio recording. For a first time attendee, I thought the show was awesome. Next time I will get one section lower so I can see everything.

She reacted classily to Kanye’s interruption last year. If you watch her eyes, she’s skimming the audience at first, looking pleased that everyone is cheering for her, than something catches her eye – she QUICKLY turns and looks at it, and says “What?” Looking confused. I don’t think she looks mad. Then they closed the curtain, as if something was delaying the show and they needed to hurry up with it. A streaker, maybe? Especially because of Miranda Lambert’s comment after that . . . Or maybe she heard something in her earpiece.
