In their first official interview together, Prince William and his new fiancée Kate Middleton revealed that the royal proposed using the engagement ring of his late mother, Diana Princess of Wales.
The Prince popped the question to Kate on holiday in Kenya after an eight-year courtship, with the stunning blue 18-carat sapphire and diamond ring.
The Daily Mail reports that Diana chose the ring after becoming engaged to Charles in 1981. William and Kate’s 2011 nuptials are already rumored to surpass the excitement of his parents highly viewed ceremony.
While posing for pictures with his future Princess at St. James’ Palace, William told reporters that giving Kate the ring was his way of ensuring his late mother could be part of the occasion. He told the press: “As you may have recognized, it’s my mother’s engagement ring, so of course it’s very special to me and Kate’s very special to me now as well, and it’s only right the two are put together. It was my way of making sure my mother didn’t miss out on today, and the excitement and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”
