Westminster Abbey Chosen as Royal Wedding Location

Westminster AbbeyPrince William and Kate Middleton will marry Friday, April 29, 2010 at Westminster Abbey.  The site, which was chosen by the royal couple for its “staggering beauty” has a 1,000 year history with the royal family.

Prince William’s grandmother, the Queen, and great-grandmother, the Queen Mother, were married in the beautiful gothic church.  Westminster Abbey is also the final resting place of 17 British monarchs.

Jamie Lowther-Pinkerton, private secretary to the Prince of Wales told the Daily Mail that Westminster Abbey was chosen for “the intimate feel it maintains despite its size.”

The abbey is said to be able to seat 2,000 people.

Given its history, Westminster has strong associations for the royal family, and Prince William personally.  The church is the place where his mother’s funeral was held in 1997 after Princess Diana was tragically killed in a car accident.

The royal couple is said to be keen on planning a “very traditional” ceremony to show “Britain at it’s best” and intend to have as many people inside Westminster Abbey as possible.

William and Kate have also insisted in a “street party” atmosphere on the surrounding streets to ensure that everyone can share in their special day.
