Michelle Williams and Ryan Gosling star in ‘Blue Valentine,’ a film which centers around married couple Dean and Cindy, and shows their changing relationship over a number of years, shifting between different time periods.

The film, which first received an NC-17 rating because of an “emotionally intense” sex scene, will now only be rated R after producer Harvey Weinstein personally argued in front of the MPAA ratings board Wednesday, to achieve the more theater and Oscar-friendly rating.
The decision was reportedly unanimous.
The board has come under fire recently, as many were quick to point out that ‘Black Swan,’ which features a similar sex scene between Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, only received an ‘R’ rating.
“The essence of our film is that it’s intimate and emotional and the sex doesn’t feel fake. It’s an honest relationship between two people, and it feels real because I have great actors,” Blue Valentine’s director Derek Cianfrance said in support of his film [via Pop Eater]. “It’s as if the MPAA is saying, ‘Your actors are good – but they’re too good.”
