Type 2 Diabetes Diet

Manage your diabetes through healthy eating

Although adhering to specific dietary restrictions to manage your diabetes may seem challenging at times, the good news is that many of the guidelines for a healthy diabetic diet are the same as those for any overall healthy diet: limit the amount of sugar, fat and alcohol you consume; keep your body fueled and balanced by eating smaller meals more often; choose high-fiber, nutrient-rich whole grains, fruits and vegetables; and watch how many carbs you eat, and when — especially refined carbohydrates.

Of course, for diabetics, some of these dietary considerations are even more structured and are critically important because of the need to control or reduce their blood sugar levels.

Creating Your Diabetic Diet Plan

Tips for comprehensive diet plan that will help you successfully manage your type 2 diabetes include:

  • Be realistic. If you work full-time, have young kids or are just otherwise busy, or if you aren’t too experienced with cooking, then you won’t want to stress yourself out with a complicated diet that includes meals requiring dozens of steps and several hours to prepare. Stick with diabetic recipes that are simple to follow and execute.
  • Try something new. While you don’t want to feel like a slave to your kitchen, a diet with many specific restrictions can get old really quickly if you’re eating the same few foods or meals all the time. Experiment with different foods and tastes — you never know what will become a new favorite.
  • Consult an expert. A registered dietician can help you work out a personalized eating plan that will fit with your lifestyle as well as your health-related goals and individual medical considerations.
