Leighton Meester Announces She’s Leaving “Gossip Girl”
Leighton Meester may not stick around long enough to find out who Gossip Girl is. The Huffington Post reports that the 24 year-old actress will leave the CW show – in two years.
She “obviously enjoys working on the show and living in New York,” she says, but wants to move on to other projects (read: movies). She’ll stick around for two more years, “Because we’re under contract.”
Leighton stars in the upcoming musical Country Strong with Gwenyth Paltrow, which hits theaters on January 7, 2011. (You might remember her underwhelming single “Somebody to Love” with Robin Thicke.) Earlier this year, she acted in romcoms Going the Distance and Date Night.
Leighton’s Blair Waldorf is the best thing about Gossip Girl – so will the show end when she leaves? “I don’t know,” she said, “but I think there’s that old saying about wanting to go out on top.”
Back in August, rumors swirled that Blake Lively wanted out of the show as well, and had asked for her character, Serena Van der Woodsen, to be killed. Executive producer Josh Schwartz set the record straight on Twitter, writing: “Have to respond. No truth to rumors that BL (Blake Lively) requested to have Serena killed. All is well.”
