Amber Portwood Sent to Jail
Teen Mom star Amber Portwood was jailed Monday on felony domestic battery and child neglect charges, stemming from an incident in which she slapped, choked and kicked Gary Shirley, the father of her daughter, Leah.
According to CBS News, Anderson, Indiana police took her to jail, who jailed under a 24-hour hold until Tuesday afternoon. She posted bail, but had to remain in jail overnight.
Detective Mitch Carroll told The Herald Bulletin that the child neglect charges stem from Portwood’s young daughter being present during two filmed instances of domestic abuse. The incident aired on an episode of Teen Mom in September, prompting dozens of viewers to call the state’s child abuse hotline to report Amber’s behavior.
Amber claims she is innocent, and that the events never happened in front of her daughter.
“Amber is scared,” Amber’s brother, Shawn Portwood, told E! News. “Gary is here with us. He’s upset, too.” Various news outlets have also reported that she is currently pregnant with her second child.
If convicted, Amber is facing up to three years in jail and a $10,000 fine.
