Jasmine is an emerging artist that combines classic pop music infused with a smooth R&B/Soul attitude. Many have watched her open for Lil Wayne, Day 26, Omarion, and J Holiday. At 20 years young, Jasmine is ready to make a lasting impact on the music world with her debut EP, “The Rest of My Story.” According to Def Jam’s Senior VP of A&R, “Jasmine has an unique sound and look that identifies with some of my favorite artists like Rihanna, her edge is like FeFe Dobson. She’s a pop-star.“ - (Sha Money XL). With a goal of creating quality music, Jasmine has perfected her songwriting under the production of music heavyweights like Checkmate Music Group (Raven Symone), Steve B (Michael Jackson, Beyonce), and Billy Schleifer (Dr. Dre). We were fortunate to interview the budding artist last week and her interview is below!
How would you describe your music?
along the lines of pop infused with r&b, though we love the idea of “having no limits,” so we incorporate a lot of other genres as well.
Has music been a big part of your life?
music has always been a HUGE part in my life. I was raised around music, members in my family sang, and I grew up singing in Church then continued to sing in my high school worship team, jazz band, and choir.
On your website, it mentions that you’d rather focus on your art rather than the heavy focus on appearance – What have you done differently than other musicians, do you think?
I am the artist that is also IN LOVE with fashion, though I do it in a way that’s comfortable for everybody. I don’t feel like I need to compromise myself to sell music–my music speaks for itself.
Who was your influences growing up?
Lauryn Hill has been the biggest influence musically. She’s the type of artist that I connect with the most because she delivers music with substance and that’s the type of music I represent.
If you could collaborate with anyone, who would it be?
Ofcourse, my dream is to collaborate with Lauryn Hill. I think that would be magical. I would also love to collaborate with Kanye West, I love his art and I think he’s a genius.
How would you describe your new album?
It’s pretty much occurrences in my life. I touch topics of love, family, struggles, faith and we do it in a way that sounds and feels good. Each song is a different sound–it’s very diverse, catchy, fun, sad, and it just connects with all emotions.
What’s your favorite song on the album?
That’s a tough one, each song touches a different part of my life so it’s very hard to choose a favorite for me. It’s like having to choose your favorite child, it’s impossible. ha ha Though, my favorite song to perform is “Drummer Boy.” It’s a very fun song representing girl power and it showcases a lot of attitude, which I love.
