Respected astronomer Parke Kunkle is telling NBC news that a change in the Earth’s alignment is now causing your astrological sign to change.
Apparently, Not only are there new zodiac sign dates released but some astronomers are coming forth with a thirteenth sign called Ophiuchus, which will have an effect on your sign if you’re a Scorpio or a Sagittarius.
The legitimacy of the new sign is still up in the air but is being printed in lists (see below). Not sure what you’re supposed to do if your birthday falls in these dates but good luck trying to pronounce your new sign!
Not sure about you, but my birthday falls on August 5, so this change affects me in a big way. According to this news, I am no longer a leo but now, I’m a cancer

For 26 years I’ve been a Leo (luckily I don’t live my life by my astrological sign but I did always love being a Leo) and now all of a sudden I’m something/someone completely different? I don’t think so. I will ALWAYS be a Leo.

If you were born BEFORE this, then you are still your original zodiac sign. You will have those characteristics still.
The Earth’s alignment didn’t change 10 years ago, it changed NOW, so your sign was behind the sun when you were born. So every child born from here on out will follow these dates instead.
So if you’re born Jan. 30th, 1986, You’re still an Aquarius. If your child is born Jan. 30th 2011, then they’re a Capricorn.

The signs were determined around 200AD based on the constellation that the sun rises through at various times of the year. The tilt of the Earth has been slowly changing through the years to the extent that the dates listed above are currently more accurate. Unless you are 1000+ years old, you are more likely born under the sign listed above. And to further ruin your day, there are actually 14 constellations in the zodiac. Get ready to have someone else shatter your cosmic world when they rearrange the zodiac again to align with the real constellations. Remember, like gambling lines, horoscopes are for entertainment purposes only.

I think the change would only affect those born after the change in the signs happened. Your zodiac sign is calculated by when you were born, and that date will never change regardless of the changes in the Earth. Those born before the change should go by the old system, those born after the change should go by the new system.

I never lived by the signs, never even looked at it until I got to college, that was just for curiosity. I thought maybe there could be some way that the day I was born affected who I was. I found that I was quite similar to my sign, but if this “new” astrology is correct, I’m nothing like it and don’t see the relation.
You know, instead of complaining about this we should actually do something about it. Honestly, I really don’t care if the Earths axis shifts or the stars don’t line up anymore, what is is what is. If we don’t agree with this, we should protest the changes a guy is trying to make to something that’s been the same for a very long time. I don’t believe that we need to change the zodiacs and add in a new sign just because some guy says we should.

If there really are sign changes then they should only affect people born on the year of the change onward, because my astrological chart when I was born(which is when it counts!) did not contain this imposter sign. my personality, therefore, does not reflect it.

It’ll affect anyone born -after- the changes. So unless you were born after roughly 2009, your still the same sign you’ve always been.

There is a school called sidereal astrology that changes the Zodiac so that it continues to line up with the constellations as the Earth’s axis wobbles in a circle throughout the ages (precession of the equinoxes, if you want to read up on it). IOW, the siderealists say that the true Zodiac is “out there”, to put it simply. This astronomer sounds like somebody playing head-games in order to discredit astrology. The new ‘discovery’ by scientists only applies to people born from today on. I’m still a Cancer…not a freakin Gemini. Plus there’s no truth in it cause our zodiac is based on the tropical zodiac which is based on the seasons not cause of the way the earth tilts.

The news is simply that the IAU (International Astronomical Union) is adding a thirteenth constellation to their zodiac. This is a different zodiac than the one astrology uses. You sign did not change, now please stop telling everyone that it is.

This is called a cusp. It isn’t new (according to “old” astrology, I am a Libra-Scorpio because I was born on October 23rd.) If you look at previoius astrology dates it’s not unusal to see the end/start dates of a sign different on various websites or newspapers or wherever you read your horoscope.
Cusps aren’t generally included in your average horoscope, but they exist. I usually just read both signs and pick which one I like most.

I am 48 years old. I have never lived my life in reference to my horiscope or zodiac sign. However, I will say that there have been times in my life that I have read my horiscope, and to my amazement it has always been completely accurate to that point in time of my life. A fluke? Coinsedence? Maybe. People identify themselves through their zodiac signs, thats a given. From the beginning of time man has looked to the skys and the stars for many reasons. I have read all the comments here, and it seems like changing these horiscopes is taking away a lot of people’s identities. Thats just what I gather from what I have read. “Believe in what you want.” Everyone has their own beliefs. There is nothing wrong with that either. As for me .. I am a Capricorn obviously. I was born December 26th. I’m going to have to stay that way I’m afraid. For the simple fact that it would take away the pleasure from my husband of calling me an “Old Goat.”

Hmmmmm…. I’m wondering. Could a change in the Earth’s alignment possibly bring about a change in individual’s based on their planetary pulls. Perhaps those who have always felt like their sign but now have a new one may experience some changes within themselves, even if only slight. I would look at this as a positive. A new perspective. A combining of past experience with new experience. Supposedly, I was an Aries and am now a Pisces. This fits my life as I have sought to alter some of the more outrageous aspects of being an Aries. If you were born on one of the overlapping dates which sign do you choose? how do you choose? Make some sense of this please cause I’m confused. For people who are confused by this:
Your birth was a singular event in time. Whatever the alligment of the stars in the sky at that point in time remains the same now. This change is a description of how the positions of the stars relative to the earth have changed, nothing more.
So you can acknowledge that the signs have changed without relenquishing your heavenly identity… these 2 claims do not undermine eachother. To argue that the signs haven’t changed is as asinine as thinking that people are changing the sign your were born under personally.
No one is telling you that they have gone back in time and shifted the sky around the night you were born. They are saying the man made calander dates have been adjusted to reflect changes in the position of our sky relative to these stars in order to account for changes in the axis of rotation of the earth. That is all.
I repeat: NO ONE IS CHANGING YOUR ASTROLOGICL SIGN BECAUSE THAT WOULD REQUIRE TIME TRAVEL AND AND THE ABILITY TO MANUALLY MANIPULATE INCREDIBLY MASSIVE AND DISTANT HEAVENLY BODIES.

Why the New Zodiac is Wrong

The introduction of the new sign Ophiucus is an attempt to channel or interpret the configurations of a constellation, or a body of stars, and work it into the 12-zodiac astrology system which is based upon the seasonal marking points of the equinoxes and related to the planetary configurations. Under the new system, all current signs are apparently shifted by about one month or so, and the sign Scorpio is squeezed into the week of November 23-29 when the constellation Scorpius passes through that part of the year. Scorpio as we knew it was swallowed entirely by the assigned dates of the new Libra.
However, this apparent change or shift in the constellations should not affect the current workings of astrology for several reasons. Astrology as was performed for the past thousands of years has rested upon the configuration of the planetary bodies in relation to a person’s birthplace, the exact hour being used to determine the ascendant according to planetary and celestial bodies’ configurations. The planets represent the ego, outlook, or persona of the person, and the configuration of certain planets in relation to the others would determine other traits such as needs (often associated with the moon sign) and the external ego (ascendant). A person born in the middle of November, for example, would be considered a Scorpio because the sun passes through Pluto which is considered a planet that governs that sign. This person would embody some of the traits ascribed to the Scorpio personality in addition to effecting the influence of that sign, often associated with research. What has happened is that the “new zodiac” signs have been confused with the constellations, or the position of body of stars, in relation to the person’s birthplace. Libra’s constellation, for example, would appear during the period assigned traditionally to Scorpio and Scorpius, the constellation so named after the scorpion which is symbolic of Scorpio, would appear during November 23-29 which is in the sign Sagittarius.
There are a number of possibilites why this is so. A first possibility is that the constellation presiding over the sign may be said to effect an “influence” over that part of the sign. For Scorpio, the constellation Libra, when it passes through that sign, may impart a sense of judgment or discernment. For the week of November 23-29, Scorpius may impart some qualities associated with Scorpio to that part of Sagittarius. Astrology combines not only the sun sign and the moon sign but other aspects, including planetary configurations. Each sign is supposedly split into three decans which have differing qualities according to the rulership or influence of presiding planets, though they all share the same “theme” represented by the planet governing their shared sign. For example, Gemini is often divided into three decans presided over by Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius, though all three decans are considered essentially Gemini. The constellation passing through the sign may be another “aspect” or influence of that part of the sign in determining his or her personality.
Another factor that perhaps causes some confusion is the “carryover” of some signs’ traits into others. It has often been observed that natives of one sign may exhibit some of the traits of the sign preceding it; some astrologers would point to the significance of having “recently passed through” that sign. A gemini, for example, may show a great appreciation of food, or “comfort food,” which is often used to describe a Taurus. A cancer might be rather garrulous, but his essential nature is supposedly to hold onto things and letting go only afterwards. A Leo can be a great caretaker of the home, a carryover trait from Cancer, and a Virgo may be rather flamboyant when attracting a mate; a Libra may be critical and practical if a situation calls for it, and a Scorpio may seem to possess judgment and discernment as well as the ability to balance another person’s view if called for; a Sagittarius may seem to be able to see through one’s exterior, and a Capricorn may seem to be headed past the horizon; an Aquarius may often have a more conservative framework from which he works, and a Pisces may be rather friendly, humanitarian, and diffuse in compassion; an Aries may seem somewhat nebulous at times and a Taurus may appear to take on the lead on occasion. Some signs also have special qualities that seem to contradict their essential nature. Capricorns, for example, are often noted for growing younger with age, after having experienced some hardships; it is a cardinal earth sign associated with construction and public distinction among other things. Cancers can be talkative in matters concerning relationships; they are also changeable and moody and capable of becoming confidence tricksters; they may also change affiliations.
There is also the influence of the progressed sun. A person born in one sign, for example, may have his goals, image, or aspirations changed later on in life due to the influence of the newer configuartion of planetary bodies; he may also take on the traits of another sign. Some qualities may not change, but some can. Each year in a person’s life could be said to correspond to a day progressing after the person’s day of birth. For example, a person born in January 21 who is thirty years old would probably have an affinity with someone who is born on February 21 because of his or her progressed sun. That is, his or her views, aspirations, image, or goals, may be influenced by or have an affinity with Aquarius. A Gemini born in June 3 may see his progressed sun move into Leo at the age of around forty-eight. The “new zodiac” seems to offset each sign by about one month. If a person’s characteristics, traits, and aspirations can be observed over time, it can be seen that a person may enter a turning point when his progressed sun crosses into another sign. Since each sign is followed by a supposedly incompatible element, it would seem that they appear to change, though their ego or outlook may remain the same. Fire and air signs have often been associated with “masculine” qualities such as energy, enthusiasm, activity, and are diurnal while earth and water signs are associated with “feminine” qualities such as receptivity, sensitivity, selectivity, practicality, and are noctural. Of course, there are several other aspects and influences that one needs to take a look at in determining a more holistic view of a person’s astrological profile. It is possible that the “new zodiac” has somehow noticed this “change” without making the proper distinctions. Scorpio, which was replaced by Libra, could be associated with the more “masculine” qualities of Sagittarius, as a Scorpio’s progressed sun would move into Sagittarius. Perhaps it is more likely that the “carryover” traits were used in confirming this “new” zodiac, if evidence were used at all.
The 12-sign system of astrology corresponds to the seasons. Scorpio, which is traditionally associated with the fall, would represent death and decay. Each season represents also an “inner age” and Scorpio could be said to preside over the ages forty-nine through fifty-six. Its tarot card is often shown as “Death,” which represents death through putrefaction but also the qualities of renewal, regeneration, or rebirth; it is associated with change. Aleister Crowley called Scorpio the “great putrefier” due to its nature towards putrefaction, or getting rid of what one does not need. It is associated with transformation that is total and complete, sometimes secrecy, research, other people’s possessions, and emotional intensity among other traits and associations. It is often compared with the ocean, and many Scorpio natives seem to have an appreciation of views of the ocean. It makes sense that this sign would correspond with the fall, sometime between late October and late November. There is a fixity of emotion associated with this time of the year; it is also the time of hoarding before winter, and Pluto presides over the underworld as well as wealth. Sylvia Plath, for example, was a Scorpio. To call the week of November 23-29 the new Scorpio would be to deny the astrological and symbolic influence of the season, which has proven significant in the establishment of astrology; it would be ascribing the traits of the fixed water sign to a muteable fire sign. Perhaps why this week is associated with Scorpio is because of the qualities imparted by the Scorpio sign itself. Those born on the “cusp” of two signs seem to have traits corresponding to both signs, often deemed incompatible. The week November 23-29 would coincide with the Scorpio-Sagittarius cusp, which is acknowledged and referred to by some astrologers as the “Cusp of Revolution,” though usually cusps can include slightly more of the previous sign and a bit less of the rising sign. The natives born in this week would then exhibit some traits of Scorpio, perhaps a strength of energy and tenacity of willpower with secrecy coupled with those of Sagittarius. Scorpios are often recognized by their intensity, composure, and emotional nature. Another sign, Leos are accompanied by the end of summer; its associations include the child, the lover, and the glory of man that comes at summer’s end before the beginning of autumn. Each week also corresponds to a different “theme” in astrology.
To give another example of seasonal significance, people in the spring often are considered to possess more energy and enthusiasm while those in the fall appear more critical or selective; those born in the summer are often said to have more measured responses and those born in the winter are said to be more tolerant. Capricorn, for example, occurs sometime between late December and late January; it is associated with winter and its corresponding tarot card is the Devil who appears as a cloaked priest; it is the point during which the sun begins its climb from the southernmost point, bringing perhaps with it aspirations and hope, and Crowley noted its significance in his book The General Principles of Astrology.
It has been pointed out that the Babylonians chose not to include Ophiucus to keep the 12-sign system intact. However, there are a number of other such potential signs, such as Ceta, and other bodies of stars that would correspond to any of the 88 or so recognizable constellations in space. The 12-system astrological sign is important because it keeps not only with the seasons, but also enables astrologers to configure associations among the signs in a manner that has been revered and studied by astrologers for thousands of years. So Ophiucus would not be an actual “sign” but perhaps a constellation that influences that part of Sagittarius. The traits ascribed to Ophiucus could be used to describe that part of sagittarius, just as the traits ascribed to Scorpius could be used to describe the influence of that constellation on that part of sagittarius; it need not revolutionise the system in a manner that is counter-intuitive. Astrology was numerically significant in keeping with the 12-sign system. It allows one to read relationships among the signs according to some of the “major” and “minor” aspects such as the square, opposition, trine, sextile, quincunx, and others. The introduction of these new ascribed dates would distort the significance of the system for the sake of the introduction of one constellation, when there are other constellations that pass through the signs throughout the year. The Minnesota Planetarium Society has already announced its intention to break with the 12-sign system, but perhaps without consideration to the workings of astrology. It has already generated quite a bit of confusion, especially to those who may care more than they are willing to admit, though they may not realize that the “newness” is really an attempt to re-configure a system that has proven to be of significance. The more impressionable who look to astrology may already have done some “shopping around” to determine whether or not they fit their new ascribed sign and perhaps found some confirmation in a different perception. The new sign Ophiucus just seems too “new age” and unaccountable to withstand the tests of evidence, much less to alter the configurations; it may in fact generate more confusion in the long run. The Babylonians did not invent astrology; astrology also has its roots in Greek, Roman, and some Egyptian culture which has shaped its significance. The “wobble” in the earth’s axis which supposedly created this shift is being exaggerated in its significance. Answer me this: why, over the past several decades, have birth charts continually been produced and used in astrology with specific calculated times and locations of planetary bodies in relation to place of birth, and why should a tilt in the earth’s axis render these calculations insignificant? The 12-sign system corresponds to the compass, and the cardinal directions are often ascribed to the four elements: fire, water, earth, and air. The twelve signs are also divided into three: cardinal, muteable, and fixed. Each cardinal sign is squared or opposed by another cardinal sign; each fixed and muteable by the same, respectively. Historians point out that astrology was used to determine some significant politican events; some generals were said to have selected soldiers who had a Mars influence in their birth. Astrology has been used to shape history; there is no reason why this new system should be considered particularly significant.
The supposed misalignment of the constellations isn’t news. To find out more about your sun sign, just google your birthdate and “astrology.” The stars should be forced to match the signs, and not the other way around. This is also a good example of why you shouldn’t trust everything you read in the news. This is my opinion.

If you were born BEFORE this, then you are still your original zodiac sign. You will have those characteristics still. The Earth’s alignment didn’t change 10 years ago, it changed NOW, so your sign was behind the sun when you were born. So every child born from here on out will follow these dates instead. So if you’re born Jan. 30th, 1986, You’re still an Aquarius. If your child is born Jan. 30th 2011, then they’re a Capricorn.

The ones that we mainly use here in the West are still good and haven’t changed. The “new” dates that are being quoted have been around for a lot longer than now. From recently studying freemasonry and other ancient legends and societies, I have been made more aware of my zodiac and the positioning of the stars around us. To say that the position of the earth in the universe (which is constantly changing) doesn’t affect you is silly. I mean i don’t know everything – like you all pretend to – but i certainly don’t look for all of my answers in the bible or mainstream religions. Religions (to me) appear to be just metaphors; symbols for something greater and divine that has happened amongst us. Sort of like mysteries, each needing to be correctly interpreted and solved.. I do believe there are people – or secret societies – that are aware of these divine or scientific truths; but i believe it is not what you think..Something unknown to the world that’s been taught to a select few through secret ceremonies and rituals throughout time. Stuff us proles will never know – unless we look for ourselves! Ancient people’s have studied the stars and the heavenly bodies above us for thousands of years.. What compels you – average american human beings – who are dumbed down by the government and stupid shows like the jersey shore, to think that the stars are not relevant? Some of the greatest civilizations that ever existed (Egypt for example) had amazing knowledge of the stars and cosmos beyond our own understanding, and based their entire life upon it! And these are humanities greatest roots, the Greeks, the Egyptians, the Sumerians, all of them.. We’re all human, yet we cant even agree upon what’s real out there and what’s just stories made up to make you feel good and keep the “system” in tact. Ancient and medieval civilizations all believed in something divine from the cosmos, but now a few thousand years down the road and you see us American folk who think we are so smart and righteous, when if you’d actually just read a book and turn off the tv you’d discover that there are so many amazing things in this world waiting to be learned and that the American society that you all love so much was created by people who believed in things you would call blasphemy today. Things like human and animal sacrifices, demi-gods, angels that walked among humans and the true power of the human mind and consciousness – all really bizarre stuff – but still, stuff that the people who made our homeland believed. Freemasons. So the real question – being that I was born an Aries – is what do we consider “our” zodiac? If this 13th sign Ophiuchus has always been around, then it is fair to assume that you’ve always been the same zodiac, you were just misinformed your whole life. If I was born an Aries, that means I was really born a Pisces due to the inclusion of the 13th zodiac sign that we are just hearing about now! Like I said, I don’t know it all or much of anything I’m sure, but I do know that it’s a little annoying that everyone in the world wants to jump on a forum and declare their zodiac and “fight” this change. Instead, you all should be mad at the people who tell you your “facts” for not telling you the right stuff and hope that there are not many more events like this to come that may regard more important human affairs.

If this was changed for 2011 i would think it only affects those born from 2011 on. If it is based on a change the stars and the earth. However if you were born before that date you probably still use the old date range since at the time of your birth the stars were aligned more towards the old dating of the zodiacs. I also find it interesting that a 13th zodiac will be re-appearing there actually was a 13th zodiac in ancient times however the constelation dissapeared over the millenia so it was dropped. Im not sure if they are using the old name have a new name for this 13th zodiac.

these new zodiac signs dont mean a thing unless you are following the sidereal zodiac signs in which case you zodiac sign has changed but if your following the western/tropical zodiac sings they have not changed at all nor do they apply to people born after 2009. so if your freaking out about this supposed change, DONT BE! you are still the same sign as you ever were and the 13th sign only appies to the sidereal zodiac as well

This change is minor compared to the fact that, the signs have been gradually changing since someone made all this shit up in the 1800s (google it). Each sign is actually days off, because of the earth’s axis, causing the procession of the equinox.
Meaning, your sign dates were wrong when you were born, when your parents were born, and probably when your grandparents were born. Your entire family has likely been dead wrong about all their precious zodiac junk. Google the correct dates, and you’ll see that they have been moving 1 day every few decades. This is not a sudden change, its a gradual one that no one ever cared to keep up with.

I have been researching and practicing astrology for about ten years. I have a love/hate relationship with it and It could all be bull crap for all I know but I will continue researching the subject because I find it fascinating. Having said all this, the new signs just make more sense than the old ones. This is Not just my opinion. It adds up.
Astrology has ignored Ophiuchus from the beginning. Traditionally only 12 of the 13 signs were talked about in pop culture. But there are 13 constellations straddling the ecliptic. That is a fact. The Ecliptic is how the signs are and were determined.
Do the research. Then you’ll see that Ophiuchus has been apart of the same ecliptic as all the other signs.
I first started guessing people’s birthdays in college a few years after studying astrology. I thought, “hey I know this stuff pretty well, let’s try this”. And I wasn’t so bad at it, better than most people I knew had tried it. I was right on about thirty percent of the time. The other seventy percent I was usually off by one sign. When i guessed Sagittarius they were a Capricorn. When I guessed Aquarius they were a Pisces. Gee go figure. But now after researching the “new” sign dates I am able to guess birthdays at a much higher rate.
People in general don’t like change. But listen, nothing has changed. We have just been fed the wrong information. I.E. The Bible. Tradition can harm society.

Wow, that’s crazy but I honestly felt this change, I thought it was something else, haha! My boyfriend and I have not been astrologically compatible in the longest time, then all of sudden, somewhat gradually I started noticing little changes, I full blown said something about it 2 weeks ago, and now I’ve stumbled upon this article….I’m glad something good came out of it. But I would still like to do more research. How odd, if I’m a Scorpio all of a sudden? HAHA!! Though I already have Mercury in Scorpio, along with Venus in Sag in the 8th house. ophiucus can`t be a sign , there are 12 signs on the wheel, 6 pairs, 3 of each of the 4 elements,
this thing is ridiculous. even the sidereal astrology can`t have 13 signs, it`s not about the constellation placement, but fixed points(stars) that mark a wheel and share 30 degrees for each sign, 30×12=360 degrees a complete circle, it seems this thing is using the real constelation placement, one bigger than the other

In some sites, it stated that the traits of ur new sign are added..so im partly virgo? thats kinda unpleasant to me lol. and even if ppl say you’re still what you are, bcuz ur bown before 2009. however you guys thought of that every planets impacts us/stars. so most likely the 13th sign will also impact everyone even being born before 2009?
From what i hear the new zodiac signs only apply for recent years. So you are still the same sign as always, it’s children and babies that signs will occur different.

I was born on the cusp of Aquarius, which a couple years ago changed me over to start of Pisces… and now you are telling me I will move farther back into being Aquarius again…. this is hogwash@! and! by the way, the zodiac has 12 cycles which correspond in transgression to include the (time period) precession of the earth equalling approximately 26,000 years. the ancients (ie. egyptians. mayans. etc) knew this thru close observation and incorporated it into their calendars which could measure longgggggggggggggggg periods of time (26,000 years equaled a NEW AGE) each zodiac sign is a cycle within an AGE. a full circle equals 360 degrees right? 360 divided by 12=30 degrees for each sign of the zodiac. 26,000 years divided by 12 = 2,166 years. So, each zodiac sign is approximately lasting around 2,166 years. We are currently in the AGE of Pisces and will enter the AGE of Aquarius approx around 2050. and also the Mayans calendar ended ONLY due to completing the full 360 degree cycle of the zodiac to signify the starting of a NEW AGE (aquarius)

Just to add, you Zodiac sign doesn’t change. It has something to do with the Zodiac of Constellations and the Tropical Zodiac. So it does NOT effect your sign.
